Woodruff Arts Center employees play an integral role in creating and supporting great art and education initiatives at the nation's third largest arts center. Comprised of three Art Partners-Alliance Theatre, Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and High Museum of Art-there's a role for everyone at The Woodruff.

POSITION SUMMARY:
The Teaching Artist is a creative and engaging art educator who will co-plan, write, and implement interactive workshops for Pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade audiences during the school week at the High Museum of Art. The workshops line up with four curriculum-based programs, all vetted by educators and school administrators. Each workshop is generally an hour in length and accompanies a gallery-led tour. Teaching Artists are integral to the Museum's educational mission: activating the Museum's collections and exhibitions with inclusive learning opportunities in order to cultivate growth through inquiry and strengthen people's connections with themselves, one another, and the wider world.
WORK SCHEDULE:
  • This is a temporary/part-time position.
  • On average, this position will work approximately 4 to ~12 hours per week, during the academic year.
  • As needed Tuesday through Friday. Will be scheduled by program coordinator.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES include the following:
  • Develop age- and contextually-appropriate lesson plans, directed by and/or in coordination with Museum Education staff
  • Provide arts instruction to participants of varying ages, backgrounds, and art-making experience
  • Prepare and coordinate supplies for workshop classes
  • Participate in training, program development, and program/project assessment with Museum Education staff as required
  • Submit project/program documentation, including, but not limited to: final lesson plans, annotated notes on the teaching experience (including observations on student performance, collaboration, and overall learning), complete materials list, and photographs of completed projects
  • Other duties as required.

Education and Experience:
  • B.A in Education, Fine Arts, Art History, or Humanities
  • Experience working with children in a camp, classroom, or other educational setting
  • Art studio experience

Skills and Abilities:
  • Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, accuracy, and ability to work independently
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including customer service
  • Strong facilitation skills and experience leading workshops with diverse learners

Communication Skills:
  • Ability to communicate effectively with Museum staff, volunteers, members, students, and teachers in English
  • Ability to communicate effectively in Spanish preferred

Reasoning Ability:
  • Ability to solve practical problems and prioritize needs in a variety of situations when standardization may be limited
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form
