Job description

Woodruff Arts Center employees play an integral role in creating and supporting great art and education initiatives at the nation's third largest arts center. Comprised of three Art Partners-Alliance Theatre, Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and High Museum of Art-there's a role for everyone at The Woodruff.

Learning and Civic Engagement
The High Museum of Art's Learning and Civic Engagement Department connects people with art and ideas to inspire better civic life. We activate the Museum's collections and exhibitions with inclusive learning opportunities, and we collaborate to share creative practices alongside art and artists. Our work cultivates growth through inquiry and strengthens people's connections with themselves, one another, and the wider world.
Summer Camp
The High Museum Summer Art Camp is a hands-on art day camp for children in rising kindergarten through rising eighth grade. Eight different week-long topics are available during the summer months providing age-appropriate art exploration and creation. Each week, more than 80 campers participate, with up to 15 dedicated camp staff implementing and supporting the program.
This Role
The Camp Teaching Artist is a creative and engaging art educator who will lead weeklong workshops and in-gallery experiences for museum art campers. The Instructor will create a friendly, fun, and artistic classroom environment that will welcome campers and caregivers. The successful candidate will incorporate gallery teaching, follow and adapt an approved lesson plan, and adhere to museum policies and procedures. They must respect kids, have demonstrated experience working with children, and excellent character and integrity. The instructor will coordinate with a dedicated Workshop Assistant and other camp staff to create ideal workshop and gallery environments for engagement of all campers. As a member of the summer camp staff, the Instructor is expected to work in cooperation with other instructors and Museum staff.
Hourly Rate: $25 per/hr
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:
During Summer Camp (85%)
โ€ข Enthusiastically implements approved lesson plans and gallery activities according to the theme of each week of camp. Adapts lesson plans as needed with approval by camp leadership staff.
โ€ข Creates a welcoming classroom environment for campers and their caregiver(s).
โ€ข Treats all children with respect, patience, and dignity. Implements positive discipline and other behavioral policies as per camp rules and regulations.
โ€ข Responsible for adherence to all rules, regulations, and policies of the High Museum.
โ€ข Responsible for immediately reporting any classroom issues or safety concerns to staff.
โ€ข Responsible for having supplies, equipment, etc. set up prior to the scheduled start of the day.
โ€ข Responsible for collaborating with the Workshop Assistant and other camp staff to ensure safety of campers, classroom management, and material availability. Responsible for communicating needs to appropriate staff immediately.
โ€ข Other duties as assigned.
Pre-Summer Camp (15%)
โ€ข Attends all readiness training workshop(s) to practice lessons, walk through galleries, and examine classroom spaces.
โ€ข Reads lesson plans and prepares classroom for the summer.
โ€ข Completes all paperwork and trainings prior to the start of camp.
โ€ข Obtains approval for any requested absences prior to the start of camp.

July 27 - 31
Additional dates may be scheduled for prep, set-up, and clean-up.
Qualifications:
โ€ข Ability to pass a background check
โ€ข Minimum: Batchelor's in Art History, Studio Art, or Art Education required OR 2-3 years of other relevant work experience
โ€ข Experience teaching young children in a classroom or community setting required
โ€ข Ability to demonstrate, engage, challenge, and interest youth through the arts
โ€ข Ability to create safe, inclusive, supportive and creative environments for children, youth, families and volunteers
โ€ข Must have strong people skills and the ability to work well with children and adults
โ€ข Strong organizational skills and attention to detail with a proven ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities, plan ahead, anticipate and articulate needs, and work independently
โ€ข Ability to problem-solve, be flexible, and imaginative; excellent communication skills
