How much do architectural model making jobs pay per year?

As of Aug 13, 2026, the average yearly pay for architectural model making in the United States is $94,690.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $80,000.00 and $107,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in architectural model making?

To thrive in Architectural Model Making, you need a keen eye for detail, strong manual dexterity, and a solid understanding of architectural concepts, often supported by a degree or coursework in architecture or design. Experience with tools such as laser cutters, 3D printers, and CAD software is highly valuable, and certification in model making or related fields can be beneficial. Excellent problem-solving, time management, and communication skills help model makers excel when working within teams or meeting tight deadlines. These skills are crucial to accurately translating architectural plans into physical models that are both precise and visually compelling.

What is an architectural model making?

An Architectural Model Making job involves creating physical or digital scale models of buildings, landscapes, or structures to help visualize architectural designs. Model makers use materials like wood, plastic, and foam, or digital fabrication tools like 3D printers and laser cutters. These models assist architects, clients, and stakeholders in understanding spatial relationships, design aesthetics, and construction details. The role requires precision, creativity, and technical skills in model-building techniques.

Is architectural model making a good career?

Architectural model making is a specialized craft that involves creating detailed physical or digital models of building designs, often requiring skills in craftsmanship, design, and familiarity with tools like 3D printing or CAD software. It can be a rewarding career for those interested in architecture, design, and visualization, with opportunities in architectural firms, design studios, and construction companies. Job stability and growth depend on industry demand and individual skill level, and continuous learning of new techniques and tools is beneficial.

What can I expect from the typical work environment in architectural model making?

Architectural model makers often work in studio or workshop settings, collaborating closely with architects, designers, and engineers. The role involves hands-on work with various materials and tools, both manual and digital, to create detailed scale models. You may work on multiple projects simultaneously, requiring strong multitasking abilities and attention to quality. Model makers frequently attend project meetings to discuss designs and progress, making teamwork and clear communication vital. This dynamic and creative environment offers opportunities to see your craftsmanship directly contribute to client presentations, competitions, and planning reviews.

Architecture Modeling Engineer

Mythic

Austin, TX • On-site

$120K - $225K/yr

Full-time

Job description

We're hiring experienced Architecture Modeling Engineers from junior to senior levels to play a key role in developing the designs that will bring our next-generation AI processors to life.

About Us:
Mythic is building the future of AI computing with breakthrough analog technology that delivers 100 the performance of traditional digital systems at the same power and cost. This unlocks bigger, more capable models and faster, more responsive applications - whether in edge devices like drones, robotics, and sensors, or in cloud and data center environments. Our technology powers everything from large language models and CNNs to advanced signal processing, and is engineered to operate from -40 C to +125 C, making it ideal for industrial, automotive, aerospace, and defense.

We've raised over $100M from world-class investors including Softbank, Threshold Ventures, Lux Capital, and DCVC, and secured multi-million-dollar customer contracts across multiple markets.

The salary range for this position is $120,000-$225,000+ annually. Actual compensation depends on experience, skills, qualifications, and location.

Architecture Modeling at Mythic:
At Mythic, architecture modeling is at the core of how we design and deliver breakthrough AI hardware. Our models allow us to quantify the real-world performance of new architectures-capturing critical tradeoffs in throughput, latency, and efficiency-before a single chip is built.

Modeling plays a central role in active design development, predicting how AI workloads generated by the Mythic compiler will run on silicon. These models serve as a golden reference for verifying RTL implementations and enable our software teams to begin developing validation and customer-facing code long before hardware is available.

Even after silicon arrives, our modeling tools remain invaluable, offering deeper insight into performance bottlenecks and guiding ongoing software optimization.
Responsibilities
  • Architect and create various types of hardware models with varying goals - e.g. transaction-level, cycle-accurate.
  • Create or build on top of existing hardware models to simulate functionality of custom AI software.
  • Create prototyping models for estimating power, performance and area of new chip architectures.
  • Create cycle-accurate models of the hardware (C++/SystemC).
  • Collaborate with peer engineering teams to co-design and co-verify the hardware implementation.
  • Investigate new architectural ideas, many co-designed with other system components.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's, Master's, or Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or Computer Science.
  • 5+ years experience required creating performance models for architectural investigations. This experience can include time spent in academic work including papers, thesis, and dissertation work. The years required can be reduced if prior modeling experience is related to systems for AI.
  • Academic and working knowledge of a variety of hardware concepts such as CPUs, memory systems, bus interconnects, security, chip interfaces, etc.
  • Proficiency and experience with C++/SystemC as used in modeling.
  • Proficiency and experience with hardware modeling for performance and/or power.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and spoken.
At Mythic, we foster a collaborative and respectful environment where people can do their best work. We hire smart, capable individuals, provide the tools and support they need, and trust them to deliver. Our team brings a wide range of experiences and perspectives, which we see as a strength in solving hard problems together. We value professionalism, creativity, and integrity, and strive to make Mythic a place where every employee feels they belong and can contribute meaningfully.
