What does an architect manager do?

An architect manager oversees architectural projects, manages design teams, and ensures that building plans meet client specifications, safety standards, and regulations. They coordinate between clients, engineers, and contractors, often using design software like AutoCAD or Revit, and typically hold relevant certifications such as a Professional Engineer license or architecture license. Their role involves planning, budgeting, and supervising the construction process to ensure project completion on time and within scope.

What are some common challenges an Architect Manager faces when leading multidisciplinary design teams?

An Architect Manager often navigates the complexity of aligning diverse teams—such as architects, engineers, and contractors—toward a unified project vision while balancing technical requirements, client expectations, and budget constraints. Effective communication and conflict resolution are essential, as team members may have differing priorities or perspectives. Additionally, staying updated with evolving building codes, sustainability standards, and new technologies can pose ongoing challenges, making adaptability and continuous learning important traits for success in this role.

The main difference between an Architect Manager and an Architect is that the Architect Manager combines design expertise with leadership and project management responsibilities, overseeing teams and client relations. An Architect primarily focuses on designing buildings and creating plans. Both roles require licensure and architectural credentials, but the Manager role adds managerial duties to the design work.

What is the highest paying architect position?

The highest paying architect position is typically a Principal Architect or Design Director, who oversee large projects and manage teams. These roles often require extensive experience, advanced certifications, and leadership skills, and they can earn significantly higher salaries than entry-level or mid-tier architect roles.

Can I make 100k as a project manager?

As an Architect Manager, earning $100,000 or more is possible depending on experience, location, and the complexity of projects managed. Senior project managers with advanced certifications and strong leadership skills often reach or exceed this salary level, especially in high-demand markets. Salary ranges can vary widely based on industry, company size, and project scope.

What are Architect Managers?

Architect Managers are professionals who oversee architectural projects and teams, ensuring that designs meet client needs, safety regulations, and project specifications. They combine architectural expertise with leadership skills to manage staff, coordinate with clients, and oversee project budgets and timelines. Their role often involves supervising design processes, resolving technical challenges, and collaborating with engineers, contractors, and other stakeholders. Architect Managers play a critical role in guiding projects from conception through to completion, ensuring both creative vision and practical requirements are met.

What degree do you need to be an architectural manager?

An architectural manager typically needs a professional degree in architecture, such as a Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch.) or Master of Architecture (M.Arch.), along with licensure as a registered architect. Relevant experience, leadership skills, and knowledge of design software are also important for this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Architect Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Architect Manager, you need extensive architectural design expertise, project management experience, and a relevant degree such as a Bachelor’s or Master’s in Architecture, often accompanied by licensure. Familiarity with design software like AutoCAD, Revit, and BIM systems, as well as knowledge of building codes and sustainability standards, is typically required. Leadership, effective communication, and the ability to collaborate across diverse teams are critical soft skills in this role. These skills ensure that complex architectural projects are delivered successfully, meeting client needs, regulatory requirements, and organizational goals.

You will drive security-by-design principles, ensure compliance alignment, and provide senior technical guidance during incidents and governance reviews.

Responsibilities:

Architecture Strategy & Leadership

  • Own security architecture strategy across Enterprise, Cloud, and Product Security, aligned to business objectives and risk posture
  • Define and maintain architecture standards, reference architectures, and reusable control patterns
  • Lead architecture reviews for new initiatives, system changes, and product programs

Security Posture, Detection & Monitoring

  • Assess and improve cloud security posture using telemetry, CSPM, and logging platforms
  • Identify misconfigurations, control gaps, and emerging risks across cloud environments
  • Partner with Security Operations to improve visibility and response for cloud-related risks
  • Critically assess AI-driven security tooling (CSPM, SIEM) to ensure detection quality

Product Security Architecture

  • Own architecture oversight across Neptune’s AMI product security program — meter endpoints, RF/cellular, cloud pipelines, and SaaS
  • Direct product security architecture resources in threat modeling, design reviews, firmware assessments, and compliance translation
  • Ensure product security aligns with IEC 62443, NIST SP 800-82, NIST SP 800-218 (SSDF), and SOC 2
  • Serve as security architecture liaison between Cybersecurity and product development teams

Incident Response & Readiness

  • Provide technical guidance during cloud and product security incidents — investigation, containment, and remediation
  • Drive root cause analysis and architectural improvements following incidents
  • Participate in tabletop exercises and threat modeling activities

Governance, Compliance & Collaboration

  • Ensure environments align with internal standards and frameworks (CIS, NIST, IEC 62443, SOC 2, Roper Cyber Controls)
  • Support audit and compliance efforts with architecture artifacts and technical evidence
  • Research emerging threats and technologies to proactively strengthen defenses
  • Leverage AI-assisted tools to accelerate security engineering, threat modeling, and compliance automation

Relevant Platforms (experience with several expected):

  • Cloud: AWS, Azure
  • Cloud Security & Posture: AWS Security Hub, AWS Config, Azure Policy, CSPM tools
  • Identity & Access: Microsoft AD / Entra ID, IAM, PAM
  • Detection & Monitoring: SIEM platforms, cloud logging and telemetry
  • Product / IoT: Embedded firmware toolchains, SAST/DAST/SCA, IEC 62443 frameworks
  • DevSecOps & Automation: IaC, CI/CD pipelines, scripting (PowerShell, Python, Bash)

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent experience)
  • 8+ years in information security; 4+ years in cloud security architecture, product/IoT security, or enterprise security architecture
  • 2+ years leading or directing security architecture resources or teams
