What is archaeological chemistry?

An Archaeological Chemistry job involves analyzing ancient materials to uncover historical and cultural information. Professionals in this field use scientific techniques like radiocarbon dating, spectroscopy, and chemical analysis to study artifacts, pottery, bones, and residues. Their work helps determine the age, origin, and composition of archaeological discoveries. Archaeological chemists often collaborate with archaeologists, museums, and research institutions to preserve and interpret historical findings.

What does an archaeological chemist do?

Working in Archaeological Chemistry involves a mix of laboratory analysis, research, and interdisciplinary collaboration. On a typical day, you might prepare and analyze samples from archaeological sites, document your results, and interpret data in the context of historical research questions. You will often work closely with archaeologists, conservators, and other scientists to exchange findings and contribute to larger excavation or conservation projects. Effective communication and teamwork are crucial, as results from chemical analyses often inform broader archaeological interpretations and help guide future research directions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in archaeological chemistry?

To thrive in Archaeological Chemistry, you need a solid background in chemistry, archaeology, and laboratory analysis, often supported by a relevant degree or postgraduate qualification. Familiarity with analytical techniques such as mass spectrometry, chromatography, and X-ray fluorescence, along with experience using laboratory information management systems (LIMS), is essential. Strong observational skills, attention to detail, and effective communication abilities help professionals collaborate across disciplines and accurately document findings. These skills ensure reliable scientific analysis, facilitate effective teamwork, and contribute to the accurate interpretation of archaeological data.

What jobs can I do with an archaeological chemistry degree?

With an archaeological chemistry degree, you can work as an archaeological chemist, analyzing artifacts and materials to determine their composition and age. Other roles include conservation scientist, laboratory technician, or research scientist in museums, universities, or cultural heritage organizations, often requiring skills in analytical techniques like spectroscopy and chromatography. These positions typically involve laboratory work, field sampling, and collaboration with archaeologists and conservators.
