Job description

The Wilson School District is seeking a motivated School Counselor for the 2026-2027 school year to provide services to our K-4 Primary School students. Salary is $55,000-65,000 per year (depending on experience). The selected candidate will work a 10-month school year schedule. Candidates that meet the qualifications are encouraged to apply.
JOB SUMMARY
At Wilson School District, we believe that education should be shaped by a sense of purpose. As the School Counselor you help students overcome problems that impede learning and to assist them in making educational, occupational, and life plans that hold promise for their personal fulfillment as mature and responsible individuals, and to perform such other duties that will insure a smooth and effective counseling center.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Assists students in evaluating their aptitudes and abilities and achievements through the interpretation of pertinent data and works with student in evolving realistic educational and occupational plans.
  • Familiarizes teachers, other staff members, and parents with the general range of services offered by the Student Assistance Team and Special Education Department.
  • Works toward developing a smooth working relationship among students, teachers, parents, and the community resources.
  • Helps students to develop problem solving techniques and decision-making capabilities.
  • Maintains and insures the safekeeping and confidentiality of students' files.
  • Provides an atmosphere of trust and confidentiality regarding student and family issues.
  • Serves as a member of the (SSAPT) School, Safety, Assessment and Prevention Team
  • Organizes student support groups to enhance students' personal growth and awareness.
  • Intervenes in crisis situations involving students when necessary.
  • Writes, tracks, and reports progress (assist) on IEP goals and objectives for special education students receiving counseling as a related service.
  • Completes student observations for special education.
  • Develops and implements individual student behavior plans and contracts, as needed.
  • Assist in monitoring and providing direct interventions for students with multiple discipline referrals and excessive tardies or absences.
  • Performs other reasonable duties as directed by the Principal or Special Education Director.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
โ€ข Master's degree from an accredited four-year college or university.
โ€ข Appropriate counseling certificate issued by the State of Arizona.
PREFERRED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
โ€ข Master's degree from an accredited four-year college or university.
โ€ข Appropriate counseling certificate issued by the State of Arizona.
โ€ข Preferred ability to relate to students, parents, and teachers.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

We are a Pre-K through 8th grade school district in Phoenix, Arizona, established as the seventh school district organized in Maricopa County in 1879 and named for Mr. W. J. Wilson, a school board member. The district name was changed in the mid-1930's to Hawkins School. From Wilson to Hawkins to Ward to Skiff, the District was bought by Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport and relocated to its current location in the early 1980's and named Wilson Primary and Wilson Elementary, opening on Martin Luther King Day in 1985. The district boundaries cover an area from Roosevelt Street to the north; the Salt River to the south; 40th Street to the east; and 16th Street to the west.
