What is an apprentice position?

Apprentice positions are structured training roles that combine on-the-job experience with classroom instruction to help individuals learn a trade or profession. Apprentices work under the guidance of skilled mentors while gradually taking on more responsibility as they gain skills. These positions are common in fields like construction, manufacturing, healthcare, and the trades, and typically last from one to four years. Apprenticeships can lead to industry-recognized credentials and often result in full-time employment upon completion.

What types of mentorship and hands-on learning can I expect in an apprentice position?

As an apprentice, you will typically be paired with experienced professionals who will guide you through daily tasks and projects, offering both supervision and feedback. You can expect to spend much of your time learning by doing—actively participating in real-world assignments rather than observing from the sidelines. Regular check-ins and evaluations help track your progress, while structured training sessions may supplement your on-the-job learning. This mentorship-focused environment is designed to help you build practical skills, understand industry standards, and prepare for more advanced roles in your field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an apprentice, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Apprentice, you need a basic educational foundation, eagerness to learn, and often a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with industry-specific tools, safety protocols, and sometimes OSHA certifications are commonly required. Strong work ethic, reliability, and effective communication skills help apprentices excel and integrate into their teams. These skills and qualities are crucial for building competence, ensuring workplace safety, and successfully progressing toward skilled professional roles.

Alyeska Builders is a locally owned general contractor serving Interior Alaska, and we're looking for motivated individuals who want to learn the carpentry trade, develop valuable skills, and build a long-term career in construction. You don't need years of carpentry experience to get started. We're looking for people with a strong work ethic, a willingness to learn, and the drive to become skilled construction professionals.

Apprentice positions are limited, and we select candidates who demonstrate reliability, initiative, a positive attitude, and a genuine interest in building a career in the trades. • Backfill & compaction
  • Road and pad building

You'll have the opportunity to develop your skills, take on greater responsibility, and work toward becoming a Journeyman Carpenter.

Grow With Alyeska Builders

We're a growing company, and we want our employees to grow with us.

For the right person, an apprenticeship can be the beginning of a long-term career at Alyeska Builders. As you develop your skills and prove your abilities, opportunities may include increased responsibility, higher compensation, Journeyman status, crew leadership, supervision, and other roles as our company continues to expand.

**We're not just looking for someone to fill a position today. We're looking for people who can become an important part of our company tomorrow.

What We're Looking For

Previous construction experience is helpful, but not required for the right candidate.

We're looking for applicants who have:

  • Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screening

Employment Requirements

As part of the Alyeska Builders team, employees are expected to:

  • Maintain a valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.
  • Complete OSHA-10 certification before employment (company-provided if needed).
  • Complete one company-approved continuing education course every six months (provided by the company and completed on your own time).
  • Report any driving violations that may affect employment responsibilities.

Benefits

  • Competitive pay based on experience and skill level
  • Year-round employment
  • Health, Dental & Vision Insurance
  • Life Insurance
  • Retirement Plan with Company Match
  • Paid Time Off & Paid Holidays
  • Fitness Membership Incentive
  • Company-provided OSHA-10 training
  • Company-paid DOT physicals (when applicable)
  • Hands-on training and career development
  • Opportunities for advancement as Alyeska Builders continues to grow

A Career With No Earning Ceiling

Your earning potential doesn't stop when your apprenticeship ends.

As you develop your skills and advance toward Journeyman status, you'll have opportunities to increase your earning potential and responsibility. After reaching Journeyman status, employees become eligible for
annual 1–3% performance-based wage increases, creating continued opportunities for financial growth throughout their career with Alyeska Builders.

Schedule

  • Full-time, year-round employment
  • Monday–Friday
  • Overtime and occasional Saturdays during the busy construction season

**Limited Apprentice Openings

We intentionally maintain a
limited number of apprentice positions so our apprentices have the opportunity to work alongside experienced team members, receive hands-on instruction, and develop their skills. If you're dependable, motivated, willing to learn, and looking for more than just another job, this could be the opportunity to learn a trade and build a career with a growing Interior Alaska company.
