Job description
The Department of Psychology at Butler University (Indianapolis, IN) invites applications for a one-semester, non-tenure track visiting assistant professor position beginning January 2027. We seek a colleague who demonstrates active dedication to inclusive undergraduate teaching. The Butler Psychology Department values candidates who share our commitment to engagement and inclusion of students, faculty, and staff with diverse backgrounds, perspectives, and experiences. Butler cannot provide visa sponsorship for this position.
This position requires full-time, in-person instruction. A Ph.D. in Psychology (or a closely related field) at the time of appointment is required. The successful applicant will be broadly trained in applied psychology and ready to teach in a multidisciplinary university core curriculum. Standard teaching load is 4 courses (12 credit hours) per semester. We seek a colleague who will be ready to teach required psychology courses such as Introductory Psychology, Research Methods & Statistics, as well as content courses in their area of expertise (e.g., developmental, industrial-organizational, health, clinical, cross-cultural, or sports psychology). The ideal candidate will have a demonstrated commitment to evidence-based and engaged-learning pedagogies and to building an inclusive classroom environment for an increasingly diverse student body.
The Butler University Psychology Department is housed in the Sally Beck Suite of the newly renovated Holcomb building and includes faculty offices, labs, and classrooms. More information about our department and the University can be found at: https://www.butler.edu/arts-sciences/psychology.
To apply, applicants should submit the following:
- a cover letter discussing qualifications for and interest in the position, including the kinds of courses the candidate would be prepared to teach
- a CV
- a teaching statement that includes evidence of effective and inclusive teaching (e.g. sample syllabi, student evaluations, peer evaluations)
- transcripts of graduate work or other evidence of terminal degree(s) (unofficial is acceptable for candidate review)
- a list of 3-5 references, including name, title, and contact information (shortlisted candidates will be asked to provide three letters of recommendation)
Note: The cover letter and CV can be uploaded individually. All other materials should be submitted as a single PDF. Finalists will be required to submit official transcripts and to undergo a background check.
Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled. For inquiries regarding the search, contact Dr. Jennifer Berry (jnberry1@butler.edu), Psychology Department chair.
