Description

Apple Service Engineering (ASE)'s Compute team is seeking an experienced SRE software engineer to build and enhance compute infrastructure, ensuring that services scale to meet the demands of Apple's Services offerings. You will work with world-class engineers on core components of Apple's Cloud Platform with an emphasis on VM lifecycle management and bare metal infrastructure to help fit Apple's diverse needs. Ultimately, you will help build the platform that delivers our applications at scale to our end users. This role offers unique opportunities to solve problems through AI-assisted automation, including building and leveraging AI tools to accelerate triage, operational workflows, and infrastructure tooling tailored to SRE workflows and infrastructure operations.

Responsibilities
  • Design, build and implement innovative solutions around VM orchestration and bare metal provisioning in a highly distributed environment
  • Operate, monitor, and triage all aspects of our production and non-production compute environments
  • Prepare alert handling procedures, runbooks, and collaborate with other SRE teams
  • Participate in on-call rotations to troubleshoot and resolve production issues, minimizing downtime
  • Automate deployment and orchestration of compute infrastructure as well as other routine processes
  • Leverage AI to gain insight across large systems and build tools that can be used in a production environment
  • Interact with and support partner teams, including engineering, QA, and program management
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, an engineering-related field, or equivalent related experience. Advanced Degree preferred.
  • 7+ years in a Site Reliability Engineering Infrastructure focused role
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Automation advocate with a strong sense of ownership - you truly believe in removing operational load via software
  • Strong experience with building and scaling cloud infrastructure and large-scale distributed systems
  • Experience with OpenStack, KVM/hypervisor technologies and Kubernetes
  • Highly proficient in Go or Python
  • Be capable of collaborating and coordinating with multiple distinct engineering teams and mentoring others
  • Experienced with highly distributed unix systems
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience managing, scaling, and troubleshooting at a planet scale
  • Experience operating large-scale multi-tenant Infrastructure as a Managed service
  • Expert-level proficiency with Infrastructure as Code tools like Chef, Ansible, or Terraform
Pay & Benefits

At Apple, base pay is one part of our total compensation package and is determined within a range. This provides the opportunity to progress as you grow and develop within a role. The base pay range for this role is between $171,600 and $302,200, and your base pay will depend on your skills, qualifications, experience, and location. Apple employees also have the opportunity to become an Apple shareholder through participation in Apple's discretionary employee stock programs. Apple employees are eligible for discretionary restricted stock unit awards, and can purchase Apple stock at a discount if voluntarily participating in Apple's Employee Stock Purchase Plan. You'll also receive benefits including: Comprehensive medical and dental coverage, retirement benefits, a range of discounted products and free services, and for formal education related to advancing your career at Apple, reimbursement for certain educational expenses — including tuition. Additionally, this role might be eligible for discretionary bonuses or commission payments as well as relocation.
