What does an appellate brief writing attorney do?

An Appellate Brief Writing Attorney specializes in drafting legal briefs and documents for cases being appealed in higher courts. Their main responsibility is to analyze trial records, research relevant laws and precedents, and craft persuasive written arguments to present the client’s case effectively. These attorneys work closely with trial lawyers and may also participate in oral arguments, but their primary focus is on written advocacy. Their expertise is crucial in influencing appellate judges' decisions, as appeals are generally decided based on written submissions and legal reasoning.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an appellate brief writing attorney?

To thrive as an Appellate Brief Writing Attorney, you need strong legal research, analytical reasoning, and exceptional legal writing skills, typically supported by a Juris Doctor (JD) and bar admission. Familiarity with legal research databases such as Westlaw or LexisNexis, and experience with citation formatting tools are essential. Attention to detail, critical thinking, and the ability to persuasively communicate complex legal arguments are standout soft skills in this position. These skills are crucial for crafting compelling briefs that can influence appellate court decisions and achieve favorable outcomes for clients.

What are some common challenges faced by appellate brief writing attorneys, and how can they be addressed?

Appellate brief writing attorneys often encounter challenges such as mastering complex records, developing persuasive legal arguments, and adhering to strict court formatting and filing deadlines. Balancing clarity and thoroughness in writing, while addressing every issue raised on appeal, can also be demanding. Attorneys can address these challenges by maintaining strong organizational skills, collaborating closely with trial counsel for case background, and continuously refining their legal research and writing techniques. Regular peer review and feedback can also enhance the quality and effectiveness of appellate briefs.

What is the difference between Appellate Brief Writing Attorney vs Appellate Lawyer?

About Us

Parnall Law Firm is the most highly reviewed and largest personal injury firm in New Mexico, dedicated to client service and results.

  • Top Culture: “Best Place to Work” and “Top Workplace” for six and five consecutive years, respectively — awards based on anonymous feedback from our employees collected by an independent organization.
  • Unmatched Support: Experienced investigators (retired police officers), dedicated case managers, and paralegals.
  • Team Environment: Collaborative and creative attorneys who foster teamwork and mentorship across every practice team.

Join us to focus on what you do best: delivering the legal research and writing that powers our attorneys’ advocacy for injured clients and maximizes case outcomes.

Who Are We Looking For? (Requirements)

  • Active license to practice law in New Mexico, or eligibility for admission.
  • Strong legal research, analysis, and writing skills, with the ability to translate research into persuasive, well-supported drafts.
  • Experience drafting motions, briefs, memoranda, and other litigation documents.
  • Personal injury or civil litigation experience preferred; insurance defense or appellate background is a plus.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with trial attorneys and Team Leads across multiple case teams and manage competing deadlines.

Why Join Us?

  • Competitive Compensation: Commensurate with experience.
  • Sign-on bonus: $25,000 paid incrementally over the first 6 months of employment
  • Comprehensive Benefits: Health, dental, and vision insurance; life, short and long term disability insurance; 401(k) retirement plan.
  • Time Off: Paid time off (PTO) and select paid holidays.
  • Work-Life Balance: Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM — a research and writing role with no court appearances required.

Your Role

As a Research & Writing Attorney, you will provide the legal analysis and drafting that support our trial attorneys’ mission: maximizing recovery for the value of our clients’ harm and the wrong that caused it. You will be a key member of a team dedicated to making a meaningful impact for injured clients across New Mexico.

Duties / Responsibilities

Legal Research:

  • Research New Mexico and applicable law on liability, damages, coverage, and procedural issues arising in personal injury and premises liability matters.
  • Monitor and summarize developments in New Mexico case law, statutes, and court rules relevant to the firm’s practice.

Drafting:

  • Draft discovery-related legal analysis and assist with pleadings as needed.
