What is an apparel import manager?

Apparel Import Managers are professionals responsible for overseeing the importation of clothing and textile products from international suppliers to their home country or company. They manage the entire process, including sourcing vendors, negotiating contracts, ensuring compliance with customs regulations, and coordinating logistics. Their role is crucial in ensuring that imported apparel meets quality, cost, and delivery requirements, while also adhering to legal and ethical standards. What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an apparel import manager?

To thrive as an Apparel Import Manager, you need a deep understanding of international trade regulations, supply chain management, and apparel industry standards, often supported by a degree in business or logistics. Familiarity with enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems, customs documentation platforms, and trade compliance software is typically required. Strong negotiation, problem-solving, and organizational skills are essential for managing vendor relationships and ensuring timely deliveries. These skills and qualifications are crucial for minimizing delays, reducing costs, and maintaining seamless import operations in a competitive market.

Working under the Manager, PLM & Pre-Production, this role ensures platforms are stable, properly configured, and technically supported, enabling product development teams to execute seasonal workflows without interruption. This role focuses on technical configuration, system support, data quality, testing, and operational excellence, while partnering with Business Analysts, Product Managers, internal IT, and vendor support teams as needed.

    • Troubleshoot integration failures by identifying root cause across source, middleware, and target systems; resolve or escalate with documented findings.
    • Execute data loads, migrations, and bulk updates; maintain data dictionaries, field mappings, and interface specifications.
  • Testing & User Support:
    • Execute test scripts for configuration changes, patches, and integrations; log and retest defects through resolution.
