Job description

WHO WE ARE

The SPCA of Polk County is the oldest nonprofit no kill animal welfare organization in Polk County, having served the community for over 45 years, through reunification, pet adoptions, rehabilitation, transport, community programs, pet store and a low cost spay, neuter and wellness clinic. With a facility over 10,000 sq. ft. located in Livingston, TX and caring for 120+ dogs and cats at any time.

POSITION SUMMARY

The SPCA of Polk County is seeking an organized and compassionate Animal Care Attendant to join our team.

The ideal candidate is adaptable, detail-oriented, customer-service focused, communicative and passionate about animal welfare.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Animal Care

  • Provide daily care for dogs and cats, including feeding, watering, walking, and administering medications
  • Bathing animals as necessary
  • Monitoring animals for signs of pain, fear, anxiety, illness and changes in behavior
  • Preparing animals for transports, transfers, including gathering records, medications and supplies
  • Ensuring animal information on kennels/condos is accurate, up-to-date and specific instructions are adhered to
  • Update digital animal records using an animal shelter database system
  • Supervise animal interactions with visitors and volunteers, to ensure safety, hygiene standards and appropriate animal care

Cleaning & Maintenance

  • Clean and disinfect kennels, condos, towers, crates, pet taxis, isolation units, common areas, including restrooms, walkways etc. daily and as required
  • Prepare and sanitize housing units for animal arrivals and departures
  • Removal of trash, performing laundry duties and follow dish cleaning protocols
  • Monitor food inventory (date and rotate), animal supplies, cleaning supplies, tools and equipment and submit order requests as needed

Team & Customer Service Engagements

  • Work independently with minimal supervision, with excellent communications skills with various team members
  • Ability to prioritize developing situations and support urgent cases
  • Greet and communicate effectively with fosters, volunteers, and the public with professionalism and courtesy

Qualifications & Essential Skills

  • Experience caring for animals in a shelter, boarding facility or clinic setting
  • Ability to handle and walk dogs of all sizes and temperaments
  • Ability to care for and handle cats of all temperaments
  • Strong organizations skills with an ability to easily adjust priorities
  • Must be able to work alone and use critical thinking skills for decision making
  • Excellent customer service skills, able to effectively communicate to a diverse clientele
  • Ability to stand or move for 8 hours, ability to bend, climb stairs and lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Reliable transportation and a clean driving record
  • Ability to pass a background check
  • Preferable experience using electronic devices and shelter management software

SCHEDULE

  • Hours approx. 25-40 hours per week, including one weekend day
  • Hourly rate, dependent on experience
  • Flexibility on areas assigned
