Job description

Overview
We're hiring an Android Engineer to join our growing mobile team. You'll work alongside our principal engineer and backend platform teams to build and improve our RFID mobile app for Zebra Android devices.
This is a hands-on engineering role where you'll write Kotlin, Jetpack Compose, integrate hardware SDKs, and help us ship secure, stable features into production. You'll work on real-world device interactions like barcode scanning, RFID reads, and offline caching, all while learning how to develop within DoD environments.
Remote (U.S. Based) | Some Travel Required

Leveraging our mission-ready technology and solutions, proven expertise in federal deployment, and strategic relationships, we enhance outcomes for the government, efficiently and effectively. With a focus on agility and collaboration, LMI serves the defense, space, healthcare, and energy sectors-helping agencies navigate complexity and outpace change. Headquartered in Tysons, Virginia, LMI is committed to delivering impactful results that strengthen missions and drive lasting value.
Responsibilities
What You'll Do
  • Build new features and help maintain our Android application for rugged Zebra handheld devices.
  • Work within an existing multi-module Android codebase alongside more experienced developers.
  • Write clean, reliable Kotlin and Jetpack Compose code that interacts with RFID, barcode, and sensor data.
  • Help implement offline data handling, local caching, and secure storage solutions.
  • Collaborate with our backend teams to support reliable application syncing and a consistent user experience.
  • Assist with testing, debugging, and troubleshooting device issues, including issues found in field environments.
  • Participate in code reviews, technical discussions, and team efforts to improve code quality and application reliability.
  • Learn and apply Android development best practices, secure development practices, and patterns used across the application.

Qualifications
What We're Looking For
  • 0-2 years of professional Android development experience, or equivalent experience through internships, coursework, personal projects, or other software development work.
  • Familiarity with Kotlin and modern Android application development.
  • Experience with or an interest in learning Jetpack Compose.
  • Basic understanding of asynchronous programming concepts such as Kotlin coroutines and Flow.
  • Familiarity with common Android architecture concepts, dependency injection, and local data storage.
  • Interest in working with hardware integrations such as RFID readers, barcode scanners, sensors, or other peripheral devices.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and a willingness to debug issues, ask questions, and learn unfamiliar technologies.
  • Familiarity with software testing concepts such as unit, UI, or instrumentation testing.
  • Willingness to learn about cybersecurity, application hardening, and DoD deployment requirements.
  • U.S. Citizenship required.
  • Ability to obtain a Secret clearance.

Git & Development Workflow
  • Familiarity with Git for day-to-day source control, including creating branches, making commits, pulling changes, and pushing code.
  • Comfortable working with pull requests and participating in a collaborative code review process.
  • Basic understanding of resolving merge conflicts and keeping a local branch up to date with the team's codebase.
  • Ability to write clear, meaningful commit messages and follow established branching and source-control practices.
  • Willingness to learn the team's development workflow, including CI/CD and release processes.

Bonus Points For
  • Experience with Jetpack Compose through professional work, internships, coursework, or personal projects.
  • Exposure to Dagger Hilt, Room, or similar Android libraries and frameworks.
  • Familiarity with multi-module Android projects or modular application architecture.
  • Experience managing devices or application profiles through a mobile device management (MDM) platform.
  • Experience with Zebra handheld devices, Zebra SDKs, or other rugged mobile hardware.
  • Exposure to RFID, barcode scanning, inventory management, or asset tracking workflows.
  • Familiarity with automated testing for Android applications.
  • Exposure to cybersecurity, RMF/ATO, application hardening, or IL4/IL5 environments.
  • Interest in building reliable mobile applications for industrial, logistics, or defense environments.
