  • Anesthesiology is an essential foundation of acute care delivery-supporting surgical services, procedural care, critical care, obstetrics, trauma, and perioperative services across BayCare Health System's acute care hospitals. As one of the largest and fastest-growing clinical departments within BayCare Medical Group, anesthesiology plays a pivotal role in access, throughput, quality, safety, and the reliability of hospital operations.
  • This role provides unified physician leadership for anesthesiology across BayCare's acute care hospitals, ensuring high-quality, safe, and efficient anesthesia services while fostering a culture where anesthesiologists, CRNAs, and Anesthesiologist Assistants can thrive. Success in this role depends on deep partnership with hospital leadership, surgical services, and the Vice President of Perioperative Services for BayCare Health System, a critical enterprise partner in the delivery of high-performing acute and perioperative care.
  • Through strong physician leadership, disciplined execution, and close collaboration with hospital and perioperative leaders, anesthesiology serves as a critical enabler of system-wide clinical performance.
Position Overview
  • The Medical Director serves as the senior physician leader for BayCare Medical Group Anesthesiology, with responsibility for clinical excellence, professional practice, workforce leadership, and operational performance of anesthesiology services across the majority of BayCare's acute care hospitals.
  • This role provides direct physician leadership for employed anesthesiologists, CRNAs, and Anesthesiologist Assistants, supporting anesthesia coverage across operating rooms, procedural suites, labor and delivery, interventional areas, and other hospital-based settings.
  • The Medical Director operates within a highly integrated, hospital-partnered model, working in close collaboration with Hospital Presidents, Chief Medical Officers, surgical leadership, perioperative services, nursing, and enterprise partners to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient anesthesia coverage that supports BayCare's acute care mission.
  • This role is intentionally designed around dyad leadership, with the Medical Director partnering closely with an anesthesia operations leader responsible for staffing, scheduling, operational execution, and financial performance. Together, the dyad shares accountability for quality, access, operational reliability, physician experience, and long-term sustainability.
Role Scope and Accountability
  • The Medical Director, Anesthesiology holds shared accountability-through dyad partnership-for the quality, safety, experience, operational performance, workforce sustainability, and growth of anesthesiology services across BayCare Medical Group.
  • This role provides physician leadership across professional practice, clinical standards, and care delivery, while partnering closely with hospital, perioperative, and operational leaders on access, staffing models, throughput, operating room efficiency, and patient experience. In addition to core leadership and management responsibilities outlined below, additional assignments may be assigned.
  • The Medical Director operates within a matrixed health system, balancing medical group leadership responsibilities with continuous partnership across BayCare's acute care hospitals.

  • Ensure delivery of high-quality, safe, and evidence-based anesthesia care across all hospital-based settings
  • Establish and oversee anesthesia clinical standards, protocols, quality metrics and policies

  • Reduce unwarranted variation while supporting appropriate site-specific clinical needs

  • Serve as leader, mentor, and advocate for anesthesiologists, CRNAs, and Anesthesiologist Assistants

  • Partner with medical group and hospital leadership to design and execute a multi-year anesthesia workforce strategy

3. Operational & Financial Excellence
  • Serve as the physician lead for anesthesia services across BayCare acute care hospitals
  • Partner to optimize anesthesia staffing models, scheduling, coverage, and call structures
  • Support operating room efficiency, throughput, and procedural access
  • Collaborate closely with surgery, perioperative services, nursing, and hospital operations
  • Provide physician leadership for operational improvement initiatives impacting anesthesia and perioperative performance
  • Support responsible stewardship of clinical and financial resources
4. Growth, Access & Acute Care Enablement
  • Support BayCare's surgical, procedural, and hospital growth strategies through scalable anesthesia coverage models
  • Anticipate and plan for growth in surgical volume, new programs, and new sites of care
  • Ensure anesthesia services remain aligned with evolving hospital, perioperative, and service line needs
  • Contribute to system planning for new ORs, procedural areas, and acute care expansion
  • Serve as a physician voice in enterprise discussions related to perioperative and acute care strategy
5. System Integration & Hospital Partnerships
  • Serve as a key physician partner to Hospital Presidents, Chief Medical Officers, and perioperative leadership
  • Maintain close collaboration with the Vice President of Perioperative Services, BayCare Health System, ensuring alignment across enterprise perioperative strategy, standards, and execution
  • Ensure anesthesiology is fully integrated into hospital governance, planning, and operational forums
  • Build strong, trust-based relationships with surgical leaders and other hospital-based specialties
  • Represent anesthesiology in medical group, hospital, and enterprise leadership settings
  • Support alignment across hospitals while maintaining consistent standards of care

Qualifications

  • MD or DO required
  • Board Certified Anesthesiologist

  • Experience leading anesthesia services across multiple hospitals strongly preferred
  • Proven ability to lead through influence in a collaborative, matrixed health system
