Analytics Engineer information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Analytics Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Analytics Engineer, you need a strong foundation in data modeling, SQL, and analytics engineering principles, often supported by a degree in computer science, data science, or a related field. Proficiency with data transformation tools such as dbt, cloud data warehouses like Snowflake or BigQuery, and version control systems like Git is essential. Strong problem-solving skills, communication, and collaboration abilities help translate business needs into scalable data solutions and foster teamwork. These skills and qualities are crucial for ensuring data quality, building reliable analytics infrastructure, and enabling data-driven decision-making across organizations.

How does an Analytics Engineer typically collaborate with data scientists and business stakeholders on projects?

Analytics Engineers play a critical bridge role between data engineering and data analysis. They work closely with data scientists to transform raw data into clean, reliable datasets that are ready for advanced analytics or modeling. At the same time, they collaborate with business stakeholders to understand reporting needs, ensuring that data models align with business goals. Regular communication and iterative feedback are key, as Analytics Engineers often gather requirements, build data pipelines, and adjust data products based on stakeholder input.

What is an Analytics Engineer?

An Analytics Engineer is a professional who bridges the gap between data engineering and data analysis. They are responsible for designing, building, and maintaining data models, pipelines, and analytics tools that enable organizations to make data-driven decisions. Analytics Engineers often work closely with data analysts and business stakeholders to ensure clean, reliable, and well-structured data is available for reporting and analysis. Their work typically involves using SQL, data transformation tools like dbt, and cloud data warehouses to create scalable and efficient data solutions.

What is the difference between Analytics Engineer vs Data Engineer?

AspectAnalytics EngineerData Engineer
CredentialsOften requires SQL, Python, data modeling certificationsRequires similar skills, often with additional focus on infrastructure and systems
Work EnvironmentFocuses on data analysis, visualization, and reportingBuilds data pipelines, manages data infrastructure
Industry UsageCommon in analytics teams, BI, and data-driven rolesPrevalent in data engineering, data platform teams

While both roles work closely with data, Analytics Engineers primarily focus on transforming data for analysis and visualization, whereas Data Engineers build the infrastructure and pipelines that enable data access. Understanding these differences helps in choosing the right career path or job role.

Job description

Title: Reporting & Analytics Lead
Location: Fully Remote
Reports To: Pharmacy Data Operations Specialist
Expion Health is building the future of pharmacy economics. As architects of prescription economics, we design how pharmacy value is created, aligning cost, clinical decisions, and performance into one accountable system that moves beyond rebates. We help organizations stay ahead of pharmacy market change with clear insight, bold thinking, and strategies built for what's next-leading the next era of prescription economics.
The Role
We're looking for a Reporting & Analytics Lead to head up our reporting and analytics function - someone who's equally at home writing SQL, shaping a data strategy, and presenting insights to executives. In this role, you'll lead a talented team of report developers and analysts, partner with leaders across the business, and turn complex questions into clear, trusted answers that drive real decisions.
This is a hands-on leadership role. You'll set the technical direction, mentor your team, and deliver analytics solutions that scale - all while championing a culture of curiosity, quality, and continuous improvement.
What You'll Own
  • Lead the team. Mentor, grow, and develop a team of report developers and data analysts. Set clear goals, manage performance, and recruit top talent as we scale.
  • Deliver trusted analytics. Own end-to-end delivery of dashboards, reports, and self-service analytics across the business - primarily in Qlik, with SQL and modern cloud data platforms under the hood.
  • Partner with the business. Be the go-to person for business leaders who need data to make decisions. Translate ambiguous questions into structured analysis and actionable insight.
  • Build for scale. Oversee the development of data models, pipelines, and BI solutions on Snowflake, dbt, and AWS data services - ensuring everything is accurate, consistent, and built to last.
  • Drive self-service. Empower non-technical users across the organization to answer their own questions through well-designed, well-governed analytics tools.
  • Bring AI into the workflow. Identify opportunities to apply AI/ML and LLM-based tools to automate, accelerate, and elevate the way we deliver analytics.
  • Present with impact. Communicate findings, recommendations, and project updates clearly to executive audiences and cross-functional partners.

What We're Looking For
  • Master's degree in Computer Science (or 8+ years of equivalent industry experience in data solutions)
  • 5+ years in reporting, analytics, or business intelligence, with at least 2 years of team leadership.
  • A track record of growing analytical teams - mentoring, coaching, and developing strong talent.
  • Strong analytical instincts and a practical, business-first approach to solving problems.
  • Hands-on expertise with SQL and cloud data warehouses (Snowflake, Redshift, or similar).
  • Experience with dbt, MySQL, PostgreSQL, and AWS data services (S3, Glue, Athena, Redshift).
  • Solid grounding in data modeling - star schemas, data marts, and semantic layers.
  • Proven experience delivering BI solutions using Qlik, Tableau, Power BI, Alteryx, or equivalent.
  • Experience applying AI and ML tools to enhance analytics workflows (LLM-based analysis, predictive modeling, or AI-powered automation).
  • Excellent communication skills - you can bridge technical and business conversations with ease and present to executives with confidence.
  • Comfort working in Agile or similar delivery frameworks.

Bonus points for:
  • Experience in healthcare, pharmacy, or insurance data (claims, eligibility, payment flows).
  • Exposure to CDC pipelines and cloud-based ETL/ELT processes.
  • Python for analytical automation or advanced analysis.
  • Knowledge of data governance and data quality frameworks.
  • Qlik or Snowflake certifications.

Why Expion, Why Now
This is a pivotal moment to join Expion. Data is at the heart of how we operate - and we're investing in the people, tools, and platforms to make analytics a true competitive advantage. As our Reporting & Analytics Lead, you won't just be running a team; you'll be shaping how the entire organization uses data to make smarter decisions, faster.
Our values say it best: Build boldly, improve relentlessly. If that resonates with how you want to work, we want to talk.
Benefits & Perks
  • 100% remote - work anywhere in the US
  • Medical, dental & vision insurance
  • HSA & FSA options
  • Access to GLP-1 weight loss program
  • Short & long-term disability
  • Life Insurance and AD&D
  • 401(k) with company match
  • Paid Time Off
  • Phone & internet allowance
  • Town halls & direct access to executive leadership
  • A company that is genuinely investing in AI - and in you!
