The Staten Island Workforce1 Career Center is partnering with A Very Special Place, Inc. to find qualified candidates for a Direct Support Professional in Staten Island, NY. Founded in 1974, A Very Special Place, Inc. provides a comprehensive network of programs and services for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The organization is committed to supporting individuals in achieving greater independence, community inclusion, and quality of life through person-centered services and advocacy.

Position Overview

The Direct Support Professional assists individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities in developing daily living skills and participating in their communities. This role supports individuals in carrying out day-to-day activities, working toward goals outlined in their individualized treatment plans, and promoting independence and self-advocacy. The Direct Support Professional also provides personal care, ensures safety, and helps individuals engage in meaningful community and social activities.

This position is located in Staten Island, NY. 

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist individuals with bathing, dressing, grooming, and personal hygiene.
  • Support daily living activities, including meals, medication reminders, and household tasks.
  • Encourage independence, life skills development, and personal choice-making.
  • Monitor health, follow care plans, and respond to emergencies as needed.
  • Implement behavior support plans and help de-escalate challenging situations.
  • Assist with community outings, appointments, and social activities.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of daily activities, progress, and incidents.
  • Communicate and collaborate with supervisors, healthcare staff, and family members.
Requirements
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Must be passionate about working with adults with developmental and/or intellectual disabilities.
  • Demonstrated patience, compassion, and professionalism.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills.
  • Prior experience is preferred.
  • Valid driver's license is a plus.
  • Must be willing to obtain or already possess CPR, First Aid, SCIP, and AMAP certifications.
  • Must become AMAP certified within one year.
