As of Jun 9, 2026, the average hourly pay for age 14 in the United States is $17.19, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $14.42 and $19.23 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What types of part-time jobs are commonly available to 14-year-olds, and what should I expect in terms of work hours and supervision?

At age 14, you can typically find part-time jobs such as babysitting, lawn mowing, pet sitting, or working as a cashier or stock clerk in small retail stores, ice cream shops, or fast food restaurants, depending on local labor laws. Expect to work limited hours, often restricted to after school or weekends, and always under close supervision by an adult or manager. Employers are legally required to ensure your safety and follow regulations regarding the types of tasks you can perform, so you'll usually receive guidance and support as you learn. These jobs are a great way to build responsibility, time management skills, and earn your first paycheck in a supportive environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a 14-year-old in part-time jobs, and why are they important?

To thrive in part-time jobs as a 14-year-old, you need basic literacy, numeracy, and a willingness to learn, along with any work permits required by local laws. Familiarity with point-of-sale systems or basic computer skills may be necessary for certain roles like retail or food service. Reliability, good communication, and a positive attitude are standout soft skills that help build trust with employers and customers. These skills and qualities are important because they ensure you can perform job duties effectively, work well with others, and gain valuable work experience for future opportunities.

What is the difference between Age 14 vs Cashier?

Required CredentialsLimited or no formal credentialsHigh school diploma often preferred
Work EnvironmentVaries; often informal or supervised settingsRetail stores, supermarkets, restaurants
Employer & Industry UsageTypically in entry-level, part-time roles for minorsCommon in retail and food service industries

Age 14 generally refers to a minimum age for certain entry-level jobs, often with limited responsibilities. While both are entry-level, Age 14 is more about eligibility, whereas cashier describes a specific job position.

What jobs can a 14-year-old legally work?

At age 14, you can work in various part-time jobs such as babysitting, pet sitting, lawn mowing, retail, or food service positions like bussing tables or working at an ice cream shop. However, there are restrictions on the types of work you can do and the number of hours you can work, especially during the school year. Federal and state child labor laws typically prohibit hazardous jobs and limit work hours, so it's important to check your local regulations. Obtaining a work permit may also be required before starting a job.

What is an Age 14 job?

An Age 14 job refers to employment opportunities available to 14-year-olds, typically following labor laws that limit work hours and job types. Common jobs for this age group include babysitting, pet sitting, lawn mowing, and working in certain retail or food service positions. Many employers require a work permit or parental consent for younger workers. These jobs provide valuable experience, teach responsibility, and help teens earn their own money.
