Job description

SCOPE:
The Maintenance Mechanic is responsible for maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing bakery production equipment to ensure efficient and continuous operation. This role supports bread manufacturing processes by performing preventive maintenance, diagnosing mechanical and electrical issues, and minimizing downtime in a high-volume food production environment.
PRINCIPLE ACCOUNTABILITIES:
  • Support without hesitation General Plant Safety, Food Safety, Food Defense Initiatives and Good Manufacturing Practices with an understanding that these are absolutes and are Priority #1.
  • Troubleshoot and repair mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems in accordance with diagrams, operational manuals and manufacturing specifications
  • Follow operation manuals, manufacturer's instructions and engineering specifications
  • Perform preventive maintenance on bakery production equipment such as mixers, proofers, ovens, conveyors, slicers, and packaging machines.
  • Respond quickly to equipment breakdowns to minimize production downtime.
  • Inspect equipment regularly to identify wear, damage, or potential failures.
  • Replace or repair faulty components such as motors, bearings, belts, sensors, switches, and gearboxes.
  • Assist with installation, setup, and modification of new production equipment.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance logs, work orders, and repair records.
  • Follow all food safety, sanitation, OSHA, and safety regulations for a bakery environment.
  • Work closely with production teams to ensure equipment is operating efficiently.
  • Anticipates and communicates potential problem areas to needed parties to include the Maintenance Supervisor and recommend a course of action to be taken.
  • Must be able to work well with all levels of personnel whether individually or in a team environment, and especially must be able to interface and communicate with line operators in order to assist with repairs and troubleshooting
  • Installs, starts up and/or shuts down equipment in accordance with company safety procedures for machine activation and shutdown in line with OSHA requirements.
  • Responsible for following all Lock Out/Tag Out procedures for machine and know where all emergency STOP, and START/STOP buttons are located.
  • Must be safety conscious, complete all needed Food Safety Incident Reports and follow Company specific GMP procedures.
  • Maintain a safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules and regulations
  • Ability to work any shift, weekends and/or holidays as well as overtime as required.
  • Perform all special requests by Lead Mechanic/Maintenance Supervisor/ Maintenance Manager
  • Maintain spare parts inventory and notify supervisors when supplies are low.

Knowledge / Skills
  • Experience in industrial maintenance or manufacturing maintenance.
  • Knowledge of mechanical systems, electrical troubleshooting, and pneumatic systems.
  • Ability to read technical manuals, schematics, blueprints and diagrams.
  • Experience with preventive maintenance programs.
  • Familiarity with food manufacturing or bakery equipment, such as industrial dough mixers, dough dividers and/or rounders, proofing cabinets, ovens, cooling conveyors, fermentation boxes, bread slicers, bagging equipment, packaging equipment, air compressors and pneumatic systems preferred.
  • Basic welding, fabrication, or machining skills are a plus.
  • Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting ability.
  • Ability to work in hot environments around ovens and production lines.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Technical or trade school training in industrial maintenance, mechanical technology, or electrical systems preferred.
  • 2-5 years maintenance experience in manufacturing, food processing, or bakery operations preferred.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Work requires some physical strain such as long periods of standing, bending, climbing, and lifting overhead. At times, may require working in or near confined spaces. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Working around moving machinery, power equipment, slippery floors and dusty areas. Very hot conditions in some areas during summer seasons. Protective clothing such as uniform, slip resistant shoes, gloves, and safety glasses are required.
