Founded in 2002 by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, and with noteworthy support from Program Ambassador Kobe Bryant, After-School All-Stars, Los Angeles (ASAS-LA) is a leading after-school program provider whose programs educate, enlighten and inspire thousands of students each day through after-school activities centered around academic support; health, fitness and nutrition; the visual and performing arts; and youth leadership and community service learning.

In partnership with the City of Los Angeles and the Los Angeles Unified School District, Montebello School District, and charter school organizations, ASAS-LA brings innovative, cutting-edge enrichment programs that contribute to reducing drug use, crime and violence; while increasing the safety of students in the after school hours. The organization serves over 8,000 students daily at 44 schools located in at-risk areas throughout LA County, which include: 12 elementary schools, 25 middle schools, and seven high schools.
As ASAS-LA Program Ambassador for the past 5 years, Kobe Bryant has provided tremendous support and life changing experiences to All-Star students.
The organization is part of the national After-School All-Stars, which provides after school programs in 14 regions, serving over 92,000 students.

Job Description

BASIC ASSIGNMENT:

The Program Leader will assist in providing leadership and support in academic, cultural and recreational enrichment. Under the direct supervision of the ASAS-LA Program Specialist, the Program Leader will provide a safe environment that educates, enlightens and inspires youth in a school setting.

MAJOR FUNCTIONS:

  • Lead and assist in planning (prep-time) and implementation of the daily after-school program under the direct supervision of a Program Specialist.
  • Responsible for writing leson plans and offering activities that incorporate California State Standards throughout the school year.
  • Maintain a 20:1 ratio using dynamic student recruitment and retention strategies.
  • Lead and assist in preparing a creative environment using academic, cultural and recreational enrichment including the preparation of needed supplies and materials.
  • Use age-appropriate methods that include youth development principles.
  • Supervise participants in the activity areas.
  • Maintain professional attitude, rapport and appearance with all program stakeholders.
  • Communicate with school staff, parents and other family members regarding program activities, student needs, academic performance, and events.
  • Attend all required staff meetings and trainings.
  • Availability to work evenings and weekends if necessary.
  • Willing to travel to off-site meetings, trainings, and events.
  • To perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience working with students in grades K-12 in recreational, educational and/or community youth outreach setting.
  • Ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively with School District staff, parents and community leaders.
  • Familiarity with quality criteria for after school programs.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and demonstrate sensitivity to others as well as respond to critical incidents and act swiftly in an emergency situation.
  • CPR and First Aid Certifications.
  • Must be 18 years of age and a high school graduate or GED.
  • FBI and DOJ Livescan Clearance required.
  • Clearance of TB Test and DMV H6 printout.
  • Physical ability to lead and participate in structured activities.
  • Fluency in a language other than English highly desired.

  • Music (capabilities of playing acoustic guitar, bass guitar, electric guitar, drums, keyboards, etc)
  • Cooking (can create affordable and nutritious menu for kids to cook)
  • Fashion Design (teach students how to design, pattern and sew)
  • Model Car/Rocket Design and Creation (assist students in car/rocket design and creation using techniques such as air brushing)
  • Mural/Graffiti Arts
  • Sports (experience coaching football, basketball, rugby, wrestling, volleyball, etc)
  • Art (drawing, sketching, painting, etc)
  • Generalist (knowledge in all general areas and willing to learn new traits)
  • Theater (knowledge and experience in directing plays/skits)
  • Martial Arts
  • Dance (experience choreographing and knowledge in hip hop, ballet, jazz, breakdancing, contemporary, etc)
