Job description

St. Wilfrid of York, Episcopal Church
Huntington Beach, CA
Youth Director, Part-Time (approx. 6-10 hours per week)

Position Description
At St. Wilfrid’s, we seek to bring out the best in people. By working with a slew of volunteers and some paid staff, you are immersed in the non-profit world of finding creative ways to help youth connect with one another and to connect with God. This position as Youth Director is essential to the success of our church.
The Youth Director is responsible for guiding youth, grades 6-12, in their understanding of themselves and their Christian faith. The youth director will report to the Rector. Duties include organizing social and faith-based youth events centered on belonging, community building, and appreciating their self-worth. The Youth Director should be a strong leader by example and knowledge, and will help to build strong leaders in the church from the youth community.

Responsibilities and Duties
These include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Facilitate regular youth gatherings in a parish setting for both social and religious purposes, including leading and teaching youth group meetings and overseeing youth events and/or retreats, as applicable
  • Provide limited counseling, spiritual guidance, mentorship, and support to youth to help them realize their individual value and goals in life, both present and in the future (This includes staying current on issues and events impacting youth to provide better mentoring and guidance.)
  • Coordinate with parents of youth group members regarding their children’s involvement and participation in the church and its activities
  • Work with “Children, Youth, and Families” leadership to coordinate service opportunities for youth within the church and in the surrounding community
  • Meet regularly with the Rector
  • Train young people on how to be faith-filled leaders, emphasizing that they are not just the church of tomorrow, but the young church of today (This includes involving them in liturgical ministries at Sunday Eucharist such as acolytes and lectors.)
  • Develop and maintain effective relationships with church staff and leadership, and with leaders in the parish and local community for the purposes of youth outreach and recruitment of youth
  • Help recruit youth volunteers and leaders to support the growing youth group

Routine Tasks

  • Remain up to date on all training, certifications, and background checks as required by the Episcopal church, county, and state
  • Have the youth center open for drop-in hours on Sundays from 9:30 A.M.-12:30 P.M. (The purpose of this is to give youth a comfortable place to “hang out” between Sunday services.)
  • Plan and conduct (in coordination with the Rector) Sunday evening youth meetings twice a month (4:30-6:00 P.M.)
  • Plan and arrange communal activities such as beach bonfires, park barbeques, fundraisers, and mini retreats
  • Plan and arrange larger activities such as inter-parish volleyball games, and trips to amusement parks or recreation centers (bowling, miniature golf, etc.)
  • Develop a core group of adult volunteers/chaperones

Sought-after Skills

  • Strong understanding of Christian teachings and principles
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Experience leading small groups
  • Ability to relate and connect with youth from diverse backgrounds
  • Good organizational skills
  • Experience working with and supporting volunteers
  • Ability to work collaboratively with various constituencies, from youth to staff and volunteers
  • Passion for working with youth and helping them grow their faith

Pay and Benefits
At St. Wilfrid of York Episcopal Church, we value our team members. The Youth Director position offers the following:

  • Salary range: $20-24 per hour, approx. 6-10 hours per week
