Job description

Position Summary:
Manages and directs engineering department resources and activities. Technical approval responsibility for the design of current production work and new product development activities. Develops and recommends corporate engineering policies and procedures consistent with company objective, including, but not limited to, new product testing procedures, problem solving, and training of engineering personnel. Manages engineering department's assets, hardware and software, and any of the other related programs or systems within the engineering department. Coordinates with technical support personnel to conduct prototype runs for products or processes. Provides technical responsibility for planning, organizing and coordinating test procedures on current and future designs. Communicates with company personnel on projects, priorities, timetables and budgets as required. Interacts with customers and/or vendors. Develops short term and long term goals of design engineering and research and development.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Directs department activities to design new products, modify existing designs, improve production techniques, and develop test procedures.
  • Resolves problems using solutions that involve new techniques, technologies, or concepts.
  • Analyzes technology trends, human resource needs, and market demand to plan projects.
  • Confers with management, production, and marketing staff to determine engineering feasibility, cost effectiveness, and customer demand for new and existing products.
  • Forecasts operating costs of department and directs preparation of budget requests.
  • Advanced skills with Mastercam, Gibbs Cam, Espree or other CAM software, and CNC machine programming, setup, and operations.
  • Ability to machine parts to specification of .1mm to .0005mm tolerances working from CAD files, mechanical drawings, and sketches
  • Ability to read, understand, and create technical mechanical drawings, sectional views, part notes, dimensions, and tolerances
  • Conversational knowledge of G-Code.
  • Advanced skills in workpiece fixturing.
  • Expertise calculating/estimating machine cycle times, determining cost effective operation sequences, machinability, and feasibility
  • Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing knowledge
  • Comprehensive understanding of Multi Axis milling, turning, grinding, cutting, EDM, etc. and detailed functional knowledge of most common machine shop tools and machines
  • Advises management of new developments which may affect profit, schedule, costs, customer relations, and/or inter-departmental relations.
  • Provides direction and example for interpretation and application of company policies and procedures to the engineering activities.
  • Maintains a working knowledge of new technologies which may improve operations and develops recommendations accordingly.
  • Maintains a working knowledge of safety policies and regulations to ensure duties of self and others are performed in a safe manner.

Qualifications:
  • Experience and Education:

  • Bachelor's degree

  • At least 2 years in a supervisory capacity

  • Technical Skills:

  • Ability to identify and resolve problems in a timely manner or develop alternative solutions

  • Proficient in the use of all Microsoft Office programs and Windows operating system

  • Ability to thrive in a changing, fast-paced growing and dynamic business

  • Detail oriented and able to manage multiple projects simultaneously

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

  • Excellent organization skills and attention to detail

  • Physical Requirements:

Supervisory Responsibilities:
  • Supervises, coordinates, provides leadership to and reviews the work of assigned staff.

  • Directly supervises individual contributors in technical positions and/or entry level professionals.

  • Estimates staffing needs.

  • Assigns work.

  • Recommends candidates for employment and makes recommendations for termination.

  • Conducts performance evaluations and salary reviews for assigned staff.

  • Responsible for the application of company policies.
