As a structural design engineer, you will develop designs for both flight and non-flight hardware including structural and mechanical hardware. Have the opportunity to work with large assembly and subassembly models in support of the Space Launch Systems (SLS) program as well as other new and existing programs at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC). You will also provide engineering design functions for time critical hardware designs and support on-going manufacturing of complex assemblies.

Job duties will include:

  • Coordination with NASA project level customers across organizations to ensure mission success

  • Work with a large team of engineers and designers to select hardware components, develop Pro Engineer/CREO models of structures and mechanisms, develop detailed fabrication and assembly drawings, and provide fabrication support to shop personnel

  • Participate in task meeting and conferences as requested

  • Collaborate with outside vendors and personnel from other NASA centers on the development of integrated flight hardware

Develop and deliver reports and presentations to MSFC and ESSCA management as needed

Qualifications - External

Engineering degree in Mechanical, Civil or Aerospace or related field from ABET accredited institution. Must be a US Citizen and have a STAR ID.

  • PHD with some experience
  • MS with at least 3 years of experience or
  • BS with at least 5-10 years of experience

The ideal candidate would possess the following skills:

  • Proficient in ProE/CREO 3-D modeling and 2-D drafting

  • Familiarity with large assemblies and large assembly management techniques
  • Familiarity with surfacing techniques
  • Familiarity in working with Import Data and data sharing features
  • Proficient with GD&T (ASME Y14.5M-1994)
  • Proficient using CAD drafting standards such as Global Drawing Requirements of MIL-STD-100
  • Proficient with MSFC CAD Standard
  • Proficient in using PDM system for active CAD data management
  • Familiarity with handling CAD and drawing DM processes through release
  • Familiarity formulating engineering calculations using excel, MathCad, etc.
  • Familiarity with launch vehicles
  • Familiarity with Product View and/or JT visualization
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products
  • Experience with NASA Design Specifications and Standards is highly desired
  • Experience in analysis of joints containing mechanical fasteners or welds
  • Educational emphasis in structural design
  • Familiarity with AISC's 15th Edition teel Construction Manual

Essential Functions

Work Environment:

Office environment. Requires ability to provide clear, concise, accurate and timely communication, both verbally and in writing (100%). Requires ability to interact professionally with co-workers, management, and client (100%). Requires travel in the domestic USA (5%). Requires ability to work at a computer for long periods of time (100%).

Physical Requirements:

Requires sitting for extended periods of time in meetings with peers, management, and with our client at NASA facilities to discuss technical issues (10%). Also, requires sitting for extended periods of time at a desk to write reports and perform engineering tasks (80%). Requires ability to use stairs or elevators for access between floors and multiple buildings at NASA and our facilities (10%).

Equipment and Machines:

Requires ability to operate a personal computer, a telephone, fax machine, copier, calculator, and other general office equipment (100%).

Attendance:

Normal workday 7:30-4:30, Monday thru Friday. Minimal overtime may be required (10%) to meet schedule milestones and to support technical demands of the job. Regular attendance is a necessity, and adequate arrangements for delegating duties during absences are required.

Other Essential Functions:

The ability to work independently with minimal supervision, and to make rational decisions, and to exercise good judgment is essential (100%). Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.
