Job description

The Assistant Extended Day Teacher is a part time, 10-month, on-site position that reports to the Manager of Auxiliary Programs for the 2026-2027 school year. The start date for this position is September 1, 2026.
The Waynflete Extended Day Program reflects Waynflete's mission-to engage the intellect of our students, to guide them toward self-governance, and to encourage their responsible and caring participation in the world. To that end, the Extended Day Program addresses students' needs at the end of the school day with a variety of activities which include arts and crafts, sports, hands-on science exploration, team building challenges, outdoor play and exploration, walking field trips, STEAM, cooking projects, multi-generational lessons, and giving back to the greater Portland community. From homework help to fun physical activities, the program is designed to provide students with the opportunity to learn, grow, and socialize in a relaxed setting.
Location: Waynflete School Campus (360 Spring St. Portland, ME, 04102)
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Supervise grade level groups: EC, K-1, 2-3, 4-5, 6-8
  • Be in person for all days and hours noted below.
  • Work at least one First Out (5:30pm) per week
  • Assist with activities such as: games, songs, program projects and more.
  • Interact with students and colleague from a place of enthusiasm, curiosity and professionalism.
  • Keep the safety of students in mind at all times.
  • Diligently track attendance including student workshop transitions
  • Complete prep and end of day clean up responsibilities.
  • Communicate incidents in a timely manner to the Auxiliary Programs Manager.
  • Participate in all of the Full Fun Days (10/23/25, 1/15/27, 3/19/27, 5/7/27, 5/14/27)
  • Complete DHHS requirements: fingerprinting approval, MRTQ registration, MMR and Tdap vaccination records, online safety training, professional development hours, etc.

Assistant Extended Day Teacher Schedule and Hours: 15.5 hours per pay period with the possibility of additional hours if providing care from 5:00-6:00pm.

Program Expectations:
  • The Extended Day Program addresses students' needs at the end of the school day with an inclusive, supportive community, engaging outdoor activities, free choice, socializing, and academic support through the guidance of a nurturing staff.
  • Assistant Teachers implement a weekly schedule balancing outdoor free play with organized games and craft choices as designed by the Lead Extended Day Teacher.

Compensation: $19 - $20 / hour based on experience.
Qualifications:
  • 1+ years of experience working with children in an educational setting.
  • CPR/First Aid/AED certified preferred.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Dedicated to working collaboratively with a diverse team of talented teachers
  • Passion for working with children and creating meaningful experiences.
