Overview

Location: Onsite, Waterloo, IA. UnityPoint Health - Allen Hospital

Shift: 1st shift, full-time

The Credentialing Specialist coordinates and manages the credentialing and privileging process for physicians and advanced practice providers, ensuring compliance with Medical Staff Bylaws, CMS Conditions of Participation, accreditation standards (including DNV), state regulations, and organizational policies. Working collaboratively with the Central Verification Office (CVO), when applicable, this role reviews credentialing information, oversees application workflows, maintains database accuracy, resolves discrepancies, and supports timely appointments, reappointments, and clinical privileges. The Credentialing Specialist may also assist with provider onboarding, workflow coordination, and regulatory readiness while serving as a knowledgeable resource to medical staff, departments, and stakeholders throughout the credentialing process.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate the credentialing and privileging process for physicians and advanced practice providers, ensuring timely completion of initial appointments, reappointments, and clinical privileges.

  • Review credentialing applications for completeness, accuracy, and compliance with Medical Staff Bylaws, regulatory requirements, accreditation standards, and organizational policies.

  • Collaborate with the Central Verification Office (CVO), providers, department leaders, and internal stakeholders to resolve credentialing issues, monitor application progress, and ensure regulatory compliance.

  • Maintain accurate provider credentialing, licensure, privileging, and database records, including tracking expirables, renewals, and reappointment cycles.

  • Evaluate provider qualifications and clinical privilege requests, identifying discrepancies or compliance concerns and escalating issues as appropriate.

  • Prepare credentialing documentation, reports, and committee materials to support credentialing decisions and governance processes.

  • Support regulatory audits, accreditation readiness, FPPE/OPPE activities, delegated credentialing, and ongoing compliance initiatives.

  • Serve as a resource for providers and internal departments by responding to credentialing inquiries, coordinating provider onboarding activities, and maintaining the confidentiality of sensitive information.

Qualifications

Education:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent

  • Preferred: Associate's degree in Healthcare Administration, Business Admin, Health Information Management, or a related field.

Experience:

  • Preferred: Minimum two years experience in a hospital setting, customer service, patient relations, credentialing or related field

Licenses/Certifications:

  • Preferred within 3 years: NAMSS Certified Provider Credentialing Specialist or Certified Professional Medical Services Management
