Position Overview
The Cost Accountant will own product and manufacturing cost accounting for the organization, providing accurate, timely cost information and analysis to support pricing, margin improvement and operational decision-making. This role will maintain standard costs, perform variance analysis, support month-end close activities, and partner closely with manufacturing, procurement and finance to improve costing processes and controls.
Key Responsibilities
- Maintain and update standard costs, bill of materials and cost rolls; ensure accurate product costing and cost master data.
- Perform detailed variance analysis (material, labor, overhead), identify drivers and present actionable explanations to management.
- Develop and maintain costing methodologies including job costing, process costing, activity-based costing (ABC), absorption costing and direct costing.
- Support inventory valuation and reconciliation (FIFO/LIFO/Weighted Average); manage inventory accounting transactions and periodic cycle counts.
- Lead month-end close activities related to cost of goods sold, inventory and manufacturing accruals; prepare journal entries and reconciliations.
- Reconcile purchase orders, accounts payable and fixed assets as they relate to cost and inventory accounts.
- Build and maintain cost models, budgeting and forecasting tools; produce monthly cost reporting and KPIs for senior management.
- Partner with manufacturing and continuous improvement teams to implement Lean/Six Sigma initiatives that reduce cost and improve throughput.
- Maintain SOX-compliant internal controls over costing processes and support internal and external audits.
- Utilize ERP and financial systems to extract, validate and analyze cost data; automate reporting and improve data quality.
Qualifications
- Bachelors degree in Accounting, Finance or related field; CPA or CMA preferred.
- 3+ years of cost accounting experience in a manufacturing environment or similar operations-driven business.
- Proven expertise in standard costing, variance analysis, job costing, activity-based costing (ABC), process costing, product costing, direct costing and absorption costing.
- Strong knowledge of overhead allocation methods, material/labor/overhead costing and labor & time costing practices.
- Experience with inventory valuation methods (FIFO/LIFO/Weighted Average), inventory management, bill of materials and MRP/ERP processes.
- Hands-on experience with ERP and financial systems such as NetSuite, Microsoft Dynamics (Dynamics 365), QuickBooks and general ledger integrations.
- Advanced Excel skills including PivotTables, VLOOKUP and complex cost modeling; SQL skills preferred for data extraction and analysis.
- Solid experience with month-end close, financial reporting, fixed asset accounting, purchase order & AP reconciliation and duty drawback where applicable.
- Proven ability in budgeting & forecasting, cost control, KPI & cost metrics development and pricing analysis.
- Familiarity with SOX/internal controls, audit support, Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma methodologies.
- Excellent analytical, communication and interpersonal skills, high attention to detail and ability to partner effectively across functions.
