What is an acting general manager?

An Acting General Manager is a professional who temporarily assumes the responsibilities and duties of a General Manager within an organization. This role typically arises when the permanent General Manager is absent, on leave, or the position is vacant. Acting General Managers oversee daily operations, manage staff, and make key business decisions to ensure the organization continues to run smoothly. They are expected to maintain continuity and stability until a permanent replacement is appointed or the General Manager returns. Their authority and scope of duties may vary depending on the organization's needs and structure.

What are some common challenges faced by an acting general manager when stepping into the role temporarily?

One common challenge for an Acting General Manager is quickly gaining a comprehensive understanding of ongoing projects and team dynamics, as they are often stepping in during a period of transition. They may also need to make important decisions with limited background information and build trust rapidly with staff members who are accustomed to a different leadership style. Balancing the need to maintain continuity while bringing their own approach can be demanding, but strong communication and adaptability are essential to succeed in this interim role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an acting general manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Acting General Manager, you need strong leadership, strategic planning abilities, and a comprehensive understanding of business operations, usually supported by prior management experience and a relevant degree. Familiarity with enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems, financial management tools, and performance analytics software is typically required. Excellent communication, adaptability, and decision-making skills help you manage teams and respond effectively to dynamic business challenges. These competencies are crucial for maintaining operational continuity, driving organizational goals, and ensuring smooth transitions during interim leadership periods.

Job description

ABOUT DSC:

In 2011, Dollar Shave Club didn't just shake up the shaving aisle—we reinvented it. A viral video put us on the map, and our direct-to-consumer model challenged an entire industry by making great razors accessible, affordable, and actually fun to buy.

Since then, we've grown far beyond blades. From grooming to personal care, we've built a lineup of quality essentials designed to make life easier (and smoother), whether you find us online or in stores near you.

Today, DSC is expanding into new categories and new markets, but our DNA hasn't changed. We're still here to cut the BS, deliver real value, and bring a little humor to the everyday routine.

So what are you waiting for? Join the Club.

ROLE SUMMARY:

As the Interim General Counsel (Maternity Coverage), you will lead the legal team providing timely, high quality, and commercially minded legal support to our business partners. Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, you will serve as part of the organization's Executive Team acting as a strategic partner to offer counsel on legal issues, ensuring legal compliance and limiting risk exposure. You will advise the company on a broad range of legal areas including corporate affairs, commercial transactions, advertising/marketing clearance, data privacy, intellectual property, and other matters.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead Legal Team: Manage, mentor, and develop a team of legal professionals — setting priorities, allocating workload across business partner functions, and managing outside counsel relationships and budgets.
  • Corporate: Provide advice regarding transactional and corporate governance matters.
  • Contract: Provide legal support for a wide variety of commercial contracts, including drafting, reviewing, and negotiating service and vendor agreements, licensing agreements, manufacturing and supplier agreements, leases, and employment and consulting agreements.
  • Marketing, Brand & Commercial Strategy: Advise Brand on owned and paid media, influencer and brand ambassador agreements, sponsorships, experiential marketing and events, creative content, and sweepstakes and promotions, while helping shape DSC's broader commercial strategy for consumer products.
  • Consumer Protection & Ecommerce Laws: Counsel Direct to Consumer team on e-commerce and online sales practices, including website terms of service and privacy policy, disclosures, and checkout flows. Advise on subscription, auto-renewal, and negative-option programs to ensure compliance with applicable federal and state requirements governing disclosures, consent, and cancellation.
  • Data Privacy: Advise cross-functional teams on compliance with areas of data use and protection laws, including state/federal consumer protection and privacy laws, GDPR and other global privacy laws.
  • Other duties as assigned or necessary.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • JD degree with license to practice with at least one state bar; must be in good standing.
  • At least 10+ years of generalist legal experience; prior experience working in-house is required.
  • Deep experience drafting and negotiating broad range of commercial contracts.
  • Regulatory Depth: Strong working knowledge of data use and protection laws (including state/federal consumer protection and privacy laws, CCPA, GDPR and other global privacy laws), consumer protection frameworks, retail and e-commerce law, and marketing/advertising compliance.
  • Consumer Packaged Goods (CPG) experience and/or ecommerce experience strongly preferred.
  • Understanding of best practices in managing intellectual property interests in transactional matters preferred, but not required.
  • Communication: Exceptional written and oral communication and negotiation skills, with the ability to distill complex legal issues for both legal and non-legal audiences.
  • Ability to handle a high-degree ambiguity, prioritize, multi-task, and manage multiple cross-functional projects to completion with little direction, and quickly shift from one situation or task to another.
  • Ability to work under pressure while maintaining a sense of humor.

POSITION TYPE:

This is a temporary, part-time position. The temporary hire will provide coverage while a permanent staff member is on maternity leave, and overlap will be provided for training and onboarding.
