How much do acoustic measurement engineer jobs pay per year?

As of Jun 9, 2026, the average yearly pay for acoustic measurement engineer in the United States is $107,902.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $94,000.00 and $117,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What does an Acoustic Measurement Engineer do?

An Acoustic Measurement Engineer specializes in testing and analyzing sound properties in various environments, such as buildings, vehicles, or electronic devices. They use specialized equipment to measure sound levels, frequencies, and vibrations to ensure compliance with regulations or optimize acoustic performance. Their work often involves designing and conducting experiments, interpreting data, and recommending improvements for noise control or sound quality. Acoustic Measurement Engineers collaborate with architects, designers, and manufacturers to solve complex acoustic challenges in products or spaces.

What is the difference between Acoustic Measurement Engineer vs Acoustic Test Engineer?

AspectAcoustic Measurement EngineerAcoustic Test Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's or higher in Acoustics, Engineering, or related field; certifications like ASA or ISOSimilar credentials; often holds certifications in acoustics or testing standards
Work EnvironmentLaboratories, testing facilities, field measurement sitesTesting labs, product development centers, field testing environments
Industry UsageManufacturers, research institutions, aerospace, automotiveAutomotive, aerospace, consumer electronics, product testing
Primary FocusMeasuring and analyzing acoustic properties and sound levelsConducting acoustic tests on products and systems to ensure compliance and performance

Both roles involve acoustics and testing, but the Acoustic Measurement Engineer primarily focuses on capturing and analyzing sound data, while the Acoustic Test Engineer conducts specific tests to evaluate product performance. They often work together but have distinct responsibilities within the acoustic testing process.

What are typical challenges faced by Acoustic Measurement Engineers when conducting field tests, and how can these be managed?

Acoustic Measurement Engineers often encounter challenges such as unpredictable environmental noise, variable weather conditions, and equipment calibration issues during field tests. Managing these requires careful planning, including choosing optimal test times, using specialized noise-reduction equipment, and routinely calibrating instruments before and after measurements. Collaborating closely with project managers and other engineers also helps in troubleshooting on-site issues, ensuring data accuracy, and meeting project deadlines.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Acoustic Measurement Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Acoustic Measurement Engineer, you need a strong background in acoustics, signal processing, and physics, typically supported by an engineering degree in acoustics, electrical, or mechanical engineering. Familiarity with measurement instruments like sound level meters, microphones, data acquisition systems, and specialized software such as MATLAB or LabVIEW is essential, along with relevant certifications like Certified LabVIEW Associate Developer (CLAD). Excellent analytical skills, attention to detail, and clear communication are important soft skills for interpreting data and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams. These skills and qualities are critical for ensuring precise acoustic measurements, effective problem-solving, and successful project outcomes.
