What Are Accounting Jobs?

Accounting jobs constitute any role in which you prepare taxes, financial statements, and other official documentation related to financial reporting. As an accountant, you are responsible for ensuring that all records contain accurate information and that you make all tax and other payments in a timely fashion. While many accountants specialize in personal finance, you may be asked to audit a company’s financial records to ensure that the business is running smoothly and efficiently. If you find issues, you report your findings and make recommendations for how to improve company or organizational efficiency. You can also work in financial forensics and search for financial malfeasances, such as tax fraud or embezzlement.

What is the difference between Accounting vs Bookkeeping?

AspectAccountingBookkeeping

Accounting involves analyzing, interpreting, and reporting financial data, often requiring certifications and higher education. Bookkeeping focuses on recording transactions and maintaining accurate ledgers. While both roles are essential for financial management, accounting provides a broader scope of financial analysis and compliance, whereas bookkeeping is the foundation of accurate financial record-keeping.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in Accounting, and why are they important?

To thrive in Accounting, you need a thorough understanding of financial principles, accounting standards, and strong analytical skills, typically supported by a degree in accounting or finance. Familiarity with accounting software such as QuickBooks, SAP, or Oracle, and certifications like CPA are commonly required. Attention to detail, organizational skills, and integrity are crucial soft skills for ensuring accuracy and ethical financial reporting. These skills and qualities are vital for maintaining compliance, supporting business decisions, and safeguarding the financial health of organizations.

What is accounting?

Accounting is the process of recording, summarizing, analyzing, and reporting financial transactions for a business or individual. It helps organizations track their income and expenses, ensure compliance with laws and regulations, and provide stakeholders with accurate financial information. Accountants use standardized methods and principles to prepare financial statements, manage budgets, and assist with tax planning. Good accounting practices are essential for making informed business decisions and maintaining financial health.

What are some common challenges accountants face during month-end and year-end closing periods?

Month-end and year-end closing periods can be particularly demanding for accountants due to tight deadlines, high volumes of transactions, and the need for absolute accuracy. During these times, accountants often work closely with other departments to ensure all financial data is complete and reconciled, which may require extended hours and strong organizational skills. Clear communication and effective time management are essential to manage these challenges and maintain the integrity of financial reporting.

Construction Accounting Manager

Scottdale, GA | 100% In-Office
$120,000–$125,000 + 10% Bonus

An Exciting Opportunity

We're partnering with a well-established and highly respected construction company that has been in business since the 1960s. Known for its strong reputation, stability, and long-tenured employees, the company is entering an exciting new chapter after being awarded a landmark $30 million data center project through a joint venture.

This is a fantastic opportunity for an experienced Construction Accounting professional—or a Senior Accountant ready to take the next step into management—to own the accounting function for a growing construction division. As the company continues to expand, this role offers a clear path toward an Assistant Controller position with future leadership responsibilities.

Position Overview

Reporting to the Controller with direct exposure to the CFO, the Construction Accounting Manager will oversee the accounting and financial reporting for multiple construction projects, including a large joint venture. This is a hands-on individual contributor role that requires someone who enjoys taking ownership, partnering with operations, and improving processes.

What You'll Do

  • Own the accounting function for the construction division from project setup through month-end close and financial reporting.
  • Perform percentage-of-completion (POC) revenue recognition and maintain accurate Work-in-Progress (WIP) schedules.
  • Manage job costing, project profitability analysis, contract accounting, and change order tracking.
  • Serve as the primary accounting contact for a 50/50 joint venture, including financial reporting and coordination with the project partner.
  • Partner with project managers and operations leadership to monitor project performance, analyze margins, and identify financial risks and opportunities.
  • Prepare monthly journal entries, balance sheet reconciliations, and financial reports.
  • Assist with budgeting, forecasting, audits, and long-range financial planning.
  • Support treasury functions including bank reconciliations, ACH transactions, wire transfers, and cash management activities.
  • Develop and improve accounting processes, internal controls, and reporting efficiencies.
  • Participate in ERP enhancements and process automation initiatives.
  • Provide financial analysis and recommendations to leadership to support business decisions.

What We're Looking For

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of progressive construction accounting experience.
  • Strong understanding of:
    • Percentage-of-Completion (POC) revenue recognition
    • Work-in-Progress (WIP) reporting
    • Job costing and project accounting
    • Construction financial reporting
  • Experience with joint venture accounting is a plus.
  • Knowledge of GAAP and month-end close processes.
  • Experience with ERP systems (NetSuite is a plus but not required).
  • Strong Excel skills and excellent analytical abilities.
  • Self-starter who enjoys working independently while collaborating with project teams and executive leadership.
  • Organized, detail-oriented, and comfortable managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.

Why You'll Love This Opportunity

  • Join a financially stable company with more than 60 years of success.
  • Play a key role in a high-profile $30 million data center project.
  • Work directly with the Controller and CFO in a highly visible position.
  • Help build and improve accounting processes as the business continues to grow.
  • Clear career advancement into an Assistant Controller role and future leadership opportunities.
  • Competitive salary, bonus, comprehensive benefits, 401(k) with company match, and generous paid time off.
