Job description

We are looking for an experienced accounting leader to guide financial operations for multiple nonprofit entities in Newport News, Virginia. This role is responsible for delivering reliable financial reporting, maintaining sound controls, and supporting strong stewardship of organizational resources. The position works closely with senior leadership and governance groups to provide financial insight that supports planning, compliance, and long-term mission success.
Responsibilities:
• Direct day-to-day accounting activities across the nonprofit organization, its endowment-related operations, and affiliated entities while ensuring consistent financial practices.
• Maintain distinct books and records for each organization and oversee the integrity of general ledger activity, reconciliations, and period-end close processes.
• Produce monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports that accurately reflect each entity’s operating results, financial position, and fund activity.
• Lead the development of budgets and financial projections in partnership with organizational leadership, and monitor results against approved plans.
• Oversee core treasury and accounting functions, including payables, receivables, payroll, cash flow, investments, and fixed asset tracking.
• Coordinate annual audit preparation, assemble supporting schedules, and provide documentation needed for external auditors and tax reporting partners.
• Ensure adherence to nonprofit accounting guidance, grant conditions, and applicable federal and state regulatory requirements.
• Manage fund accounting activities involving restricted contributions, designated balances, and endowment resources, including related reconciliations and reporting.
• Prepare financial materials for executive leadership, board members, and committee meetings, and contribute to strategic discussions on planning and risk management.
• Supervise accounting team members by setting expectations, reviewing work, and supporting ongoing growth and performance development.• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline.
• At least 5 years of progressive accounting experience, including prior responsibility for leading or supervising staff.
• Demonstrated background in nonprofit accounting, with additional exposure to foundation or endowment accounting preferred.
• Strong knowledge of fund accounting, financial controls, account reconciliation, journal entries, and month-end close procedures.
• Experience supporting external audits and preparing documentation associated with annual informational tax filings such as Form 990.
• Advanced skills in accounting systems and Microsoft Excel, with the ability to analyze data accurately and efficiently.
• Strong communication, organization, and problem-solving abilities, with success managing multiple priorities and sensitive financial information.
• Experience working with boards, finance committees, investment committees, or multi-entity nonprofit environments is preferred.
