Job description


Position Summary:

The primary function of a Sandblaster is to prep metal parts for painting by using abrasive blasting equipment to remove impurities such as paint, oil, grease, rust and dirt from the metal surface so that the paint is able to adhere to a proper surface. The sandblasterโ€™s control of the pressure and direction of the abrasive material is vital for preventing surface damage and injury to self or co-workers.


Essential Functions:


Description

  • Before the abrading action, the sandblaster protects specific areas of the work surface using masking film, tape, or other materials.
  • Sandblasters are responsible for lifting, carrying, and setting up heavy equipment and parts onto racks and dollies.
  • An important part of the sandblasterโ€™s job is the daily maintenance of the sandblasting equipment, such as cleaning and changing nozzles.
  • To prevent accidents, it is essential that the sandblasterโ€™s work area is clean and orderly, and that any unsafe working conditions are corrected or reported immediately.
  • Following all safety rules and guidelines as well as the safe operation of all equipment is paramount.
  • Use visual and other methods to ensure parts have been prepped properly for paint, i.e., things such as oil, scale, etc. have been removed from the partโ€™s finish to attain a proper finish for paint to adhere to.
  • Clean blast booth and lights and conduct any routine upkeep and or maintenance as required.
  • Keep blast and prep area picked up and free of steel, tools, and other debris.
  • Follow safe operating and lifting procedures for overhead cranes.
  • Operate forklifts and other material handling equipment according to safe operating procedures.
  • Wear proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) including Supplied Air Hood.


Qualifications, Education, Knowledge, Training, Work Experience:

  • Attention to detail
  • Willingness to work in a gritty environment
  • Ability to effectively work as part of an integrated team environment
  • Work area is clean and orderly
  • Willingness to work overtime as needed, including on weekends.




Physical Demands and Environment:


  • Manufacturing Environment with loud noises and other environmental and safety hazards present.
  • Must be able to stand for extended periods of time.
  • Must be able to lift regularly (crane to be used for large parts).
  • Must be able to operate abrasive blast equipment which creates continual pressure resistance while being operated.
  • Must have the dexterity to handle various objects necessary to complete the essential functions.


*Due to the nature of the work performed in our shop, the weight of the parts being handled varies from day to day.
