Job description

CSS, Inc. is looking for a qualified candidate to support the Fisheries Statistics Division (FSD) of NOAA's Southeast Fisheries Science Center (SEFSC). This individual will provide biological sampling, data management, and analytical support for the division's Catch Validation and Biosampling Branch.

This position is offsite and can be located at any coastal location in the Southeastern US from NC to TX.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in field operations and assist in the collection of lengths, weights, and biological samples (e.g., otoliths) from commercial and headboat fisheries catches
  • Inspect, process and prepare biological samples for shipping following the procedures detailed in the TIPS and SRHS User's Guide
  • Use custom data entry applications and database software to enter, view, and edit field data
  • Perform quality control by proofing data entries and running monthly audits using the portal's QA/QC tool
  • Participate in outreach events such as Open Houses, Youth/Career Fairs, etc. in order to explain port sampling goals and methods to the public
  • Attend training sessions or conferences to acquire updates to sampling protocols and technology.

Required Qualifications

  • MS Degree in Marine Science or a related field; OR BS Degree plus 3 years of relevant experience.
  • Ability to apply basic concepts, principles and methodologies to independently perform scientific tasks using standard methods and techniques
  • Proficient in the use of fish, invertebrate, and protected species identification books and keys
  • Experience with common word processing, database, statistical, and graphics programs.
  • Initial physical exam and/or periodic medical monitoring, including drug screening, may be required for sea-going roles.
  • Ability to lift/carry at least 40lbs and work outdoors for extended periods.
  • Ability to pass a National Agency Check (NACI) and maintain it throughout the duration of employment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience collecting catch and effort information from commercial or recreational fishermen
  • Knowledge of collection of routine biological samples (lengths, age structures, gonads, etc.) from marine fish
