Job description

Position Title: Controller
Reporting to: Vice President for Finance and Administration

Position SummaryThe Controller reports to the Vice President for Finance and Administration (VPFA). S/he directly manages all functions of the Finance Office and oversees a staff of 4 individuals. The Controller is responsible for financial management, transaction processing, reporting, internal control and compliance. This includes oversight of financial systems, policies, procedures, controls, and records management to ensure effective and prudent financial operations of the College. The Controller prepares financial statements and all other reports. S/he works closely with the VPFA on financial and investment matters, as well the preparation and presentation of materials for internal and external audiences, including the College’s Administration and Board of Trustees.

The successful candidate will be a communicator adept at transparently translating financial information and priorities across the Albertus community, while also communicating transparently with, leading and developing Finance staff and fully participating in the F&A division’s leadership team.

*The Finance Office is responsible for, among other matters, accounting, tax preparation and reporting, annual audits, management reporting, non-student receivables, cash receipts, budget development and reporting, monthly closing and variance analysis.  

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Finance Office Management – Lead Finance team, manage operations. Act as liaison with college community.
  • Financial Systems – Oversee financial systems and ensure College financial transactions and reporting are performed timely and accurately.
  • Controls – Prepare and maintain updated documentation of financial policies, internal controls, and chart of accounts.
  • Accounting – Perform and/or oversee accounting activities, including accounts payable/receivable, debt management, grant accounting, gift accounting, investment / endowment accounting, fixed asset tracking, tax reporting, reconciliations, and monthly closing.
  • Budget and Reporting – Manage annual and multi-year budget and forecasting process and monthly reports, including budget variance reporting and identification of issues of concern to management.
  • Financial Statements – Prepare monthly, quarterly and annual financial statements, tax filings, and other regulatory requirements in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles and federal, state and local regulations.
  • Audit – Coordinate annual financial and compliance audits with outside auditors. Prepare necessary documents and schedules for financial statements; federal and state; and retirement plan audits; and Federal Form 990.
  • Work with Vice President for Finance and Administration on establishing financial operating metrics and performance benchmarks.
  • Support – Assist the Vice President for Finance and Administration as needed. 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree  required. 
  • MBA, MAcc, CPA designation or similar qualification preferred.  
  • Minimum 10 years related experience with increasing functional and leadership responsibility; higher education or non-profit experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Expert knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Knowledge of regulations applicable to higher education.
  • Advanced knowledge of financial processing and reporting systems.
  • Excellent oral and written skills and ability to communicate comfortably with university leadership, faculty and staff members, Board members and many external constituents.
  • Collaborative management style with strong interpersonal skills; practices open communication with all constituents.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Able to function independently while operating effectively within a team environment.
  • Cultural competency to work with diverse student and employee population.

Working Conditions:

  • This is a full time, exempt, benefit eligible position
  • Normal office hours are 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., flexible to the needs of the department.
  • Hybrid availability available after successfully completing the introductory period.

Benefits:
Full-time employees are eligible to receive medical, dental, and vision benefits. Full-time employees can earn between 18-23 paid time off a year. The employer covers tuition remission after 90 days of employment and covers 100 % (employees are responsible for books and technology fees). The college is committed to work-life balance and has a summer schedule from June through August. We currently have 14 paid holidays, including a winter break.  You will have the opportunity to participate in our retirement plan from day one, and after one year of employment, the college will contribute depending on your service years.
