5G Field Testing information

What is 5G field testing?

5G field testing refers to the process of evaluating and verifying the performance, coverage, and reliability of 5G wireless networks in real-world environments. This testing involves using specialized equipment to measure factors like signal strength, data speeds, latency, and network stability at various locations. The goal is to ensure that the 5G network meets technical standards and delivers the expected user experience before it is fully deployed to the public. Field testers often work outdoors and collaborate with engineers to troubleshoot and optimize network performance.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a 5G field testing engineer?

To excel as a 5G Field Testing Engineer, you need a solid understanding of wireless communication principles, RF engineering, and telecommunications, often supported by a degree in electrical or telecommunications engineering. Experience with tools like spectrum analyzers, drive test equipment (e.g., TEMS, Nemo), and knowledge of 5G NR standards are typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, adaptability, and effective communication are important soft skills for coordinating with teams and troubleshooting issues in the field. These competencies ensure accurate testing, efficient network optimization, and the successful deployment of robust 5G networks.

What are some common challenges faced during 5G field testing, and how can they be addressed?

5G field testing professionals often encounter challenges such as variable signal strength, interference from surrounding networks, and the complexity of integrating new technology with existing infrastructure. Addressing these requires adaptability, strong troubleshooting skills, and collaboration with network engineers and equipment vendors. Utilizing advanced testing tools, carefully planning test routes, and maintaining clear communication with the project team can help overcome these obstacles and ensure accurate, reliable test results.

What is the difference between 5G Field Testing vs 5G Network Optimization Engineer?

Aspect5G Field Testing5G Network Optimization Engineer
Primary FocusConducting on-site tests to verify 5G network performance and coverageAnalyzing network data to improve and optimize 5G network performance
Work EnvironmentField locations, cell sites, outdoor and indoor environmentsOffice-based, data analysis, and remote troubleshooting
Required SkillsRF testing, signal analysis, equipment operationNetwork analysis, troubleshooting, software tools
CertificationsRF or wireless certifications often preferredNetwork certifications like Cisco, Nokia, or Ericsson certifications

While both roles involve working with 5G networks, 5G Field Testing focuses on on-site testing and verification of network performance, whereas 5G Network Optimization Engineers analyze data to enhance network efficiency. Both roles require technical skills but differ in work environment and specific responsibilities.

Job description

Company Summary

EchoStar is reimagining the future of connectivity. Our business reach spans satellite television service, live-streaming and on-demand programming, smart home installation services, mobile plans and products.
Today, our brands include Boost Mobile, DISH TV, Gen Mobile, Hughes and Sling TV.

Our Wireless Technology team is pioneering the future of connectivity. We're developing and enhancing a unique hybrid network model—combining our advanced, cloud-native 5G core with the nationwide reach of our partners. This approach ensures our network is flexible and powerful, designed to satisfy the social, economic, and transformative needs of the changing world.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

Candidates must be willing to participate in at least one in-person interview, which may include a live whiteboarding or technical assessment session.

Mobile devices require rigorous validation to eliminate performance degradation, dropped calls, and throughput failures prior to market launch. This role resolves device hardware and software defects through systematic manual and automated testing across LTE and 5G networks. The position bridges technical gaps between internal engineering teams and external OEM vendors to ensure pre-release hardware meets strict operational standards. Root-cause log analysis and precise defect reporting ensure seamless network integration and optimal device performance.

What Success Looks Like (Objectives)
  • Conduct manual and automated test suites across iOS and Android smartphones, tablets, and wearables to verify compliance with technical requirements and industry standards

  • Analyze device logs using chipset vendor diagnostics and custom software to identify root causes of call failures, throughput bottlenecks, and network handovers

  • Leverage AI-assisted log analysis tools to accelerate anomaly detection and automate defect classification during testing cycles

  • Document hardware and software bugs in tracking platforms with clear replication steps to drive timely resolution with OEM vendors

  • Maintain physical lab environments, flash pre-release firmware, and configure network simulators for specific call and data scenarios

Skills, Experience and RequirementsCore Skills and Competencies (What You’ll Bring)
  • Strong foundational knowledge of wireless protocols and network technologies, including 4G LTE, 5G NR, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth

  • Hands-on technical proficiency with iOS and Android operating systems, developer configurations, firmware flashing, and command-line interfaces such as Android Debug Bridge (ADB)

  • Expertise in operating network diagnostic software and interpreting complex technical log files to isolate intermittent performance issues

  • AI literacy and application skills to enhance data interpretation, streamline defect triage, and optimize engineering workflows

  • Strong written communication and decision-making skills to articulate complex engineering issues through structured test reports

  • Critical experience collaborating with cross-functional technical teams and external hardware vendors to validate performance benchmarks

Minimum Requirements
  • Minimum Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Telecommunications, or a related technical field

  • Minimum Experience: 1-3 years of experience in mobile device testing or wireless technical verification

  • Required Technical Skills: Must have at least 1-3 years of experience with:

    • iOS and Android platforms, developer options, and ADB tools

    • Network protocol log capture and analysis tools (4G LTE / 5G NR)

    • Bug tracking systems (e.g., Jira) and test case execution
