5G Field Testing information

What is the difference between 5G Field Testing vs 5G Network Optimization Engineer?

Aspect5G Field Testing5G Network Optimization Engineer
Primary FocusConducting on-site tests to verify 5G network performance and coverageAnalyzing network data to improve and optimize 5G network performance
Work EnvironmentField locations, cell sites, outdoor and indoor environmentsOffice-based, data analysis, and remote troubleshooting
Required SkillsRF testing, signal analysis, equipment operationNetwork analysis, troubleshooting, software tools
CertificationsRF or wireless certifications often preferredNetwork certifications like Cisco, Nokia, or Ericsson certifications

While both roles involve working with 5G networks, 5G Field Testing focuses on on-site testing and verification of network performance, whereas 5G Network Optimization Engineers analyze data to enhance network efficiency. Both roles require technical skills but differ in work environment and specific responsibilities.

What are some common challenges faced during 5G field testing, and how can they be addressed?

5G field testing professionals often encounter challenges such as variable signal strength, interference from surrounding networks, and the complexity of integrating new technology with existing infrastructure. Addressing these requires adaptability, strong troubleshooting skills, and collaboration with network engineers and equipment vendors. Utilizing advanced testing tools, carefully planning test routes, and maintaining clear communication with the project team can help overcome these obstacles and ensure accurate, reliable test results.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a 5G Field Testing Engineer, and why are they important?

To excel as a 5G Field Testing Engineer, you need a solid understanding of wireless communication principles, RF engineering, and telecommunications, often supported by a degree in electrical or telecommunications engineering. Experience with tools like spectrum analyzers, drive test equipment (e.g., TEMS, Nemo), and knowledge of 5G NR standards are typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, adaptability, and effective communication are important soft skills for coordinating with teams and troubleshooting issues in the field. These competencies ensure accurate testing, efficient network optimization, and the successful deployment of robust 5G networks.

What is 5G field testing?

5G field testing refers to the process of evaluating and verifying the performance, coverage, and reliability of 5G wireless networks in real-world environments. This testing involves using specialized equipment to measure factors like signal strength, data speeds, latency, and network stability at various locations. The goal is to ensure that the 5G network meets technical standards and delivers the expected user experience before it is fully deployed to the public. Field testers often work outdoors and collaborate with engineers to troubleshoot and optimize network performance.

Job description

Company Summary

EchoStar is reimagining the future of connectivity. Our business spans satellite television service, streaming and on-demand programming, smart home installation services, 5G wireless consumer and commercial services, internet and other enterprise products.

Today, our brands include EchoStar, Hughes, DISH TV, Sling TV, Boost Infinite, Boost Mobile, DISH Wireless, OnTech and GenMobile.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

Senior Automation Engineer (multiple positions-2) sought by DISH Wireless, L.L.C. in Littleton, Colorado.

Develop, document and execute 5G network CI/CD automation processes involving CI/CD pipelines of AWS CodePipeline, CNF deployments, Infrastructure as Code (IaC), end to end automation across layers of cloud-based network functions. Design and develop state-of-the-art approaches to solving complex quality issues. Communicate with Product Owners, Developers, and management to establish understanding of issues to address and proposed solutions. Drive the strategic evolution of the 5G environment by migrating legacy telecom systems toward modern cloud-native and containerized solutions. Collaborate closely with network architects to ensure the modernized platform achieves optimal scalability, performance, and flexibility. Lead the design and implementation of standardized infrastructure blueprints using Crossplane Compositions (XRDs) and Configuration Packages. This includes authoring reusable, type-safe infrastructure modules using KCL templates to govern all provisioning efforts. Design, build, and maintain robust Continuous Integration and Continuous Delivery pipelines that automate infrastructure and application deployment. Utilizing tools like ArgoCD and Crossplane to ensure CI/CD processes enforce continuous delivery across all virtualized and containerized environments. Create the necessary feedback loops to communicate status of the pipeline to the stakeholders. Embed DevSecOps principles by automating container security workflows and integrating tools like Prisma Cloud to scan images and enforce CVE thresholds. Use KCL for pre-deployment validation of Kubernetes/Crossplane manifests, ensuring all infrastructure adheres to strict compliance standards. Observability, Monitoring, and Alerting: Configure and manage the core monitoring stack, including Prometheus, Grafana, CloudWatch, and Loki, to provide deep visibility into platform health. Proactively establish and fine-tune alerts for critical metrics, ensuring rapid identification and resolution of availability or performance issues. Configure and maintain the Git Repo, Docker registry, CI tool, configuration and deployment tools. Write high-quality, scalable, and maintainable code to develop custom automation scripts and internal tooling using languages like Python. Identify and build solutions, such as microservice applications for pre-check automation, to eliminate manual processes and drive efficiency. Using Gitlab and Gitlab Pipelines. Learn, evaluate, and implement new technologies to further quality and delivery capabilities. Provide technical oversight of 3rd party vendor’s deliverables to ensure what is being delivered meets company standards. Implement end-to-end (e2e) testing for all infrastructure code and deployments to guarantee reliability and expected behavior. Specifically, use Chainsaw to automate testing of Crossplane compositions, simulating real-world provisioning scenarios. Tier 3 Support and Operational Troubleshooting: Provide expert-level Tier 3 operational support for the mission-critical cloud platform and its associated automation tools. Troubleshoot and resolve complex integration issues related to ArgoCD, Crossplane, IAM access, and various AWS services: Integrate Velero backup and restore capabilities directly into GitOps pipelines to protect production-grade Kubernetes workloads for reliable, reproducible recovery and allows for validated disaster recovery simulations.
