What is a 3rd shift welder?

A 3rd Shift Welder is responsible for performing welding tasks during the overnight shift, typically from late evening to early morning. Their duties include reading blueprints, setting up welding equipment, and joining metal components using various welding techniques. They must follow safety protocols, inspect welds for quality, and maintain equipment. Working this shift often requires adjusting to nocturnal hours and may include shift differentials in pay.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a 3rd shift welder?

A 3rd Shift Welder should possess strong welding skills in processes such as MIG, TIG, and stick welding, along with a high school diploma or equivalent and, preferably, welding certifications. Familiarity with blueprints, fabrication tools, and safety systems like PPE and lockout/tagout procedures is crucial. Dependability, attention to detail, and good time management are valuable soft skills for excelling during overnight hours with minimal supervision. These abilities ensure quality workmanship, safety, and productivity in a fast-paced, off-hours manufacturing environment.

What can I expect from the work environment and schedule as a 3rd shift welder?

As a 3rd Shift Welder, you’ll typically work overnight hours, which can involve more independent work as there may be fewer team members and support staff present during this shift. The environment is usually fast-paced and focused on meeting production deadlines while adhering to strict safety standards. You’ll need to be comfortable with night shifts and maintaining alertness to ensure the quality of your welds and safety. Collaboration with supervisors or quality control personnel may happen primarily at the beginning or end of your shift. Many employers offer shift differentials or additional pay for night work, and strong performance can lead to opportunities for advancement to lead welder or supervisory roles.

Job description

3rd Shift MIG Welders
Night owls, this one’s for you! If you’d rather trade sunrises for weld sparks, we’ve got a spot for you on 3rd shift. We’re working with a top manufacturer in Boaz, AL that’s cranking up production and looking for skilled MIG Welders to join their night crew.
This is a full-time, long-term gig for dependable folks who know their way around a fabrication shop. You’ll help build some seriously heavy-duty stuff — tanks, containers, and components that aren’t going anywhere anytime soon. Think of it as leaving your mark on steel (literally).
What You’ll Be Doing
  • Welding heavy-duty steel tanks, containers, and components
  • MIG welding to produce strong, leak-free welds (because drips are for coffee, not tanks)
  • Grinding, cutting, and prepping materials with torches and plasma cutters
  • Reading blueprints and shop drawings like a pro
What You’ll Need
  • 1–2 years of MIG welding experience (shop or industrial preferred)
  • Ability to follow written instructions, blueprints, or verbal direction
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Safety-first attitude and proper PPE (steel-toe boots and welding gear required)
The Details
  • Pay: $18–$25 DOE
  • Full-time, 3rd shift (overnights)
  • Temp-to-hire with great benefits once you’re on the company’s team
If you’re ready to weld by moonlight, send us your resume — let’s talk!
