Job description

The Electrician is responsible for maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing electrical and control systems within a chemical manufacturing environment. This role places a strong emphasis on PLC-controlled equipment, HMI systems, and 480V power distribution. The electrician will support continuous operations during third shift, ensuring equipment reliability, safety compliance, and minimal downtime.

Key Responsibilities

Electrical Systems (480V and Below)

  • Install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair 480V, 277V, 240V, and 120V electrical systems.
  • Diagnose and repair motors, motor starters, VFDs, MCCs, transformers, breakers, and control panels.
  • Perform lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures and verify zeroenergy states.
  • Read and interpret electrical schematics, singleline diagrams, and panel layouts.
  • PLC & Control Systems
  • Troubleshoot PLCcontrolled equipment (inputs/outputs, power supplies, communications).
  • Identify faults in control logic and work with engineering or controls personnel to resolve issues.
  • Familiarity with platforms such as AllenBradley (ControlLogix, CompactLogix, PLC5, SLC 500) or Siemens preferred.
  • Plant Operations & Safety
  • Support chemical processing equipment including pumps, mixers, conveyors, reactors, and packaging systems.
  • Respond to electrical breakdowns and emergency calls during third shift.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA, NFPA 70E, NEC, and sitespecific safety standards.
  • Work safely in classified or hazardous areas (as applicable).
  • Maintain accurate maintenance records and shift reports.
  • Preventive & Predictive Maintenance
  • Perform scheduled preventive maintenance on electrical and control systems.
  • Identify potential failures and recommend corrective actions.
  • Assist with equipment upgrades and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Required Qualifications
  • Journeyman Electrician license or equivalent certification
  • 5+ years of industrial electrical experience in a manufacturing environment (chemical or process industry preferred).
  • High school diploma or GED; technical or trade school preferred.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings and control schematics.
  • Proficient with electrical testing equipment (multimeter, megger, clamp meter).
  • Willingness to work third shift, weekends, holidays, and overtime as required.
  • Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in chemical manufacturing or hazardous environments.
  • Knowledge of VFD programming and troubleshooting.
  • Experience with industrial networking (EtherNet/IP, ControlNet, Profibus).
  • NFPA 70E or arc flash training.
  • Basic understanding of instrumentation (pressure, temperature, flow, level).
  • Assist with HMI screen navigation, alarm recognition, and basic configuration changes
  • Diagnose communication issues between HMI, PLCs, and field devices.
  • Physical & Work Environment Requirements

  • Ability to work in industrial environments with exposure to heat, noise, and chemicals.
  • Ability to climb ladders, work at heights, and access confined spaces.
  • Capable of lifting to 50 lbs.
  • Must be able to wear required PPE, including arc flash gear and respirators if necessary.
