How much do 3d hard surface modeling jobs pay per year?

As of May 29, 2026, the average yearly pay for 3d hard surface modeling in the United States is $78,472.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $58,500.00 and $98,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is a 3D Hard Surface Modeling job?

A 3D Hard Surface Modeling job involves creating detailed, realistic, or stylized models of mechanical, weapon, vehicle, and architectural objects for video games, films, or product visualization. Artists use software like Blender, Maya, or 3ds Max to design high-quality assets that emphasize clean topology and precision. Unlike organic modeling, hard surface modeling focuses on non-deformable objects with well-defined edges and surfaces. These models are often textured, lit, and optimized for real-time rendering or high-quality renders.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the 3D Hard Surface Modeling position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a 3D Hard Surface Modeler, you need strong proficiency in digital modeling, a solid grasp of form and detail, and a background in art, design, or computer graphics. Mastery of industry-standard software such as Autodesk Maya, 3ds Max, Blender, or ZBrush, along with knowledge of rendering engines and, at times, related certifications, is crucial. Attention to detail, creative problem-solving, and effective communication make candidates stand out by ensuring both aesthetic quality and functional collaboration with teams. These skills and qualities are essential for producing production-ready models that meet project specifications and strict visual standards in industries like film, games, and engineering.

What are the typical day-to-day responsibilities of a 3D Hard Surface Modeler?

As a 3D Hard Surface Modeler, your daily tasks often include creating detailed digital models of objects such as vehicles, machinery, environments, or props based on concept art or technical specifications. You'll frequently collaborate with concept artists, animators, texture artists, and other 3D specialists to ensure your models fit seamlessly into larger projects. Quality checking, refining topology, and optimizing models for various uses (such as real-time engines or high-resolution rendering) are also routine. This role is generally team-oriented, requiring regular communication and feedback integration to meet project milestones and standards.

Job description

Join Revology Cars as a Surface Designer Engineer

At Revology Cars, we don't just build vehicles - we reimagine icons.

We combine modern engineering with classic American muscle to produce world-class, reproduction Mustangs that meet the highest standards of quality, precision, and performance. Behind every vehicle we build is a team of skilled professionals who take pride in craftsmanship and continuous improvement.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Surface Modeling Designer Engineer plays a key role in the development of visually compelling and technically robust product surfaces. This position focuses on delivering high-quality CAD surface models that meet aesthetic, functional, and manufacturing requirements while maintaining alignment with the brand's design language.

The designer is responsible for producing detailed and accurate surface data using Rhino3D or other suitable CAD software, ensuring design concepts are successfully translated into functional and manufacturable parts. Attention to detail, surface continuity, and Class-A quality are essential to this role.

The Surface Modeling Designer supports the full product development lifecycle, from early concept development through final production-ready surfaces, ensuring on-time delivery and design integrity.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

  • Create and develop 3D surface models (Class A / freeform) and mechanical parts, with Rhino3D as the preferred CAD tool
  • Ensure high-quality surface continuity (G0, G1, G2), precise curvature control, and overall surface fairness
  • Develop complex and organic geometries suitable for automotive composite applications
  • Apply knowledge of manufacturing processes and materials, with an emphasis on composite materials
  • Translate sketches, design concepts, and visual references into accurate and production-ready 3D models
  • Prepare, validate, and release 3D CAD data for downstream activities, including detailed engineering, prototyping, tooling, and supplier handoff
  • Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including engineering, manufacturing, and external suppliers
  • Review, refine, and iterate designs based on technical feasibility, manufacturing constraints, and aesthetic feedback
  • Maintain CAD modeling standards, data organization, and supporting technical documentation
  • Support and participate in periodic design and engineering reviews

Tool Usage

  • 3D Experience Catia software
  • Rhino-Rhinoceros 3D software
  • 3D scanning tools (FARO arm, HandySCAN)
  • 3D scan post-processing software (Geomagic Design X, Control X)
  • Windows-based Computer, Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Smartsheet
  • 3D printers

WHAT YOU BRING

  • Bachelor's degree inIndustrial Design, Product Design, Mechanical Engineering, or related field
  • Strong hands-on experience withRhino3D, focused onsurface modeling
  • Solid understanding ofNURBS curves and surfaces, includingG0, G1, and G2 continuity
  • Proven ability to createhigh-quality, fair surfaces
  • Experience modelingcomplex and organic geometries
  • Basic knowledge ofmanufacturing processes, including:
  • Composite manufacturing
  • CNC machining process
  • Injection molding
  • Ability to convert design intent intomanufacturable technical solutions
