About the job

The Senior Software Developer – HIE Production Support is a hands-on engineering role focused on sustaining, enhancing, and remediating large-scale, mission-critical Health Information Exchange (HIE) platform operating in a 24x7 production environment. This role blends senior-level software development responsibilities with deep production support ownership, including root cause analysis, defect remediation, and proactive platform health improvements across healthcare interoperability solutions.

This position leverages strong software engineering fundamentals while applying deep expertise in healthcare data exchange standards and the Intersystems HealthShare ecosystem. The developer serves as a technical authority, partner, and mentor - supporting live production systems, guiding technical design decisions, and ensuring stability, scalability, and data quality across the HIE stack.

As a Sr. Software Developer, you will:

Production Support & Platform Reliability

  • Provide senior-level technical support for LIVE, 24x7 HIE production environments, ensuring system availability, performance, and data integrity.
  • Perform detailed root cause analysis (RCA) for production incidents and lead remediation through code fixes, configuration changes, and architectural improvements.
  • Troubleshoot, debug, and resolve complex issues across interfaces, applications, and integrations with minimal participant impact.
  • Participate in after-hours support as needed to provide Level-2/3 support for Severity 1/0 issues.

Software Development & Engineering

  • Design, develop, unit test, and maintain software components supporting healthcare data ingestion, transformation, validation, and exchange.
  • Produce clean, maintainable, and efficient code aligned with enterprise development standards and secure coding best practices.
  • Enhance existing software and integration components to improve performance, resiliency, scalability, and maintainability.
  • Ensures quality through functional, unit, and performance testing; partners with testing team to review and update test plans to reflect code changes from enhancements, redesigns, and bug fixes.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to translate technical and operational requirements into well-designed software solutions.

Healthcare Interoperability & Integration

  • Develop and support healthcare interfaces utilizing interoperability standards such as HL7 v2, FHIR, CDA/CCD, IHE profiles, and X12.
  • Serve as a technical expert for Intersystems HealthShare Ecosystem.
  • Advise on interface and integration design best practices to ensure long-term supportability and production readiness.
  • Support historical data remediation and continuous data quality improvement initiatives within the HIE.

Technical Leadership & Collaboration

  • Partner with operations, architecture, R&D, and customer-facing teams to identify risks, estimate level of effort, and implement reliable solutions.
  • Communicate complex technical concepts clearly to leadership, stakeholders, and non-technical audiences.
  • Author technical documentation including RCA reports, design remediation plans, and implementation specifications for internal and external use.
  • Stay current on industry trends in healthcare interoperability, cloud-enabled integration platforms, and modern software development practices.

Required qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • At least 8 years of hands-on software development experience, including support of production systems.
  • Advanced experience with Intersystems HealthShare Ecosystem.
  • Strong experience developing and supporting healthcare interfaces using interoperability standards (HL7, FHIR, CDA, IHE, X12).
  • Demonstrated expertise in diagnosing and resolving complex, production-impacting software, and integration issues.
  • Strong proficiency with SQL, APIs, JavaScript, and ObjectScript, with hands-on experience supporting, enhancing, and troubleshooting production applications.
  • Experience translating technical requirements into working software and communicating solutions to diverse audiences.
  • Proven ability to work effectively in customer-facing and matrixed team environments.
  • Equivalent combination of related education, training and experience may be considered in place of the above qualifications.

 Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with multiple integration engines (e.g., Intersystems Ensemble, Mirth Connect, Rhapsody, Cloverleaf).
  • Exposure to SAS platforms, analytics, or reporting tools within healthcare workflows.
  • Experience supporting large-scale HIEs, population health systems, or public sector healthcare platforms.
  • Linux background a plus, including familiarity with command-line tools, file systems, log analysis, and supporting applications in a Linux-based environment.
  • Knowledge of production monitoring, performance tuning, and operational readiness best practices.
  • Prior experience mentoring junior developers or serving as a technical lead in production environments.
