Job description

Instructional Designer
Reports to: Training Manager
FLSA Status: Exempt
Hours: 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., unless otherwise dictated (1-hour lunch)
Job Location: 3500 Alum Creek Drive, Columbus OH, 43207
General Overview: The Instructional Designer will be the architect of learning experiences that empower construction teams to work smarter, safer, and more efficiently. This work will directly influence how office personnel, field leadership, and tradespeople acquire critical skills-whether it's mastering new technologies, understanding safety protocols, or improving project coordination.
Responsibilities:
  • Design and develop end-to-end training programs from the ground up, including both instructor-led (in-person/virtual) and e-learning courses
  • Design and develop engaging instructional materials-such as interactive e-learning modules, hands-on workshops, and job aids-tailored to construction environments
  • Partner with stakeholders and subject matter experts (SMEs) to identify training needs and skill gaps while translating business goals into effective learning solutions
  • Apply instructional design methodologies (i.e., ADDIE, SAM) and adult learning principles to create high-quality training
  • Develop a variety of learning resources, such as facilitator guides, participant materials, job aids, assessments, and multimedia content
  • Leverage tools like Articulate 360 to create multimedia-rich learning experiences. Evaluate training effectiveness through feedback, assessments, and performance metrics; adjust content accordingly to meet desired business objectives
  • Ensure all training content is aligned with organizational goals, brand standards, and compliance requirements
  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously, meeting deadlines while maintaining quality and consistency
  • Know and adhere to all company policies and procedures
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Instructional Design, Organizational Development, Communication, Business, or a related field (or equivalent professional experience)
  • At least 3 years of experience developing training programs in a corporate, professional, or workforce development environment
  • Proven experience creating curriculum for adult learners, including both instructor-led training and e-learning solutions
  • Demonstrated ability to design training programs from concept through implementation, including needs analysis, design, development, and evaluation
  • Experience partnering with business stakeholders and subject matter experts to align training with organizational goals and performance outcomes
  • Strong working knowledge of adult learning theory and its application in workplace learning environments.
  • Hands-on experience with e-learning authoring tools (i.e., Articulate 360) and Learning Management Systems (LMS)
  • Experience evaluating training effectiveness using metrics, feedback, and performance data to drive continuous improvement
  • Must successfully pass a pre-employment drug screening. (George J. Igel & Co., Inc. is a SUPR Drug-Free Workplace and tests for marijuana)
  • Must maintain an MVR (Motor Vehicle Record) that meets the Company's eligibility

Preferred Qualifications
  • General heavy civil construction knowledge
  • Experience designing training within the construction industry
  • Familiarity with learning analytics, including measuring training effectiveness and tying results to business outcomes
  • Exposure to change management initiatives and supporting organizational transformation through training

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office and Learning Management Systems
  • Ability to maintain a stationary position, using a personal computer and/or iPad and relevant software for extended periods
  • Strong communication skills (both written and verbal)
  • Ability to build and maintain positive working relationships
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment
  • Ability to manage workload independently and meet dynamic deadlines
