The Trade Compliance Specialist, Transportation & Customs Compliance is responsible for managing day-to-day tasks necessary to import and/or export Boehringer Ingelheim's pharmaceutical products while complying with U.S. Customs & Border Protection, FDA and USDA regulations & requirements.

Main responsibilities for this role include coordination of international shipments, submitting ISF filings, tracking shipment milestones, managing shipping documentation, processing FTZ shipments, filing export declarations (EEI), managing supply chain security, ensuring customs & trade compliance (customs broker oversight), and verifying customs duties & freight payment.

To achieve this core objective, the Trade Compliance Specialist, Transportation & Customs Compliance works closely with internal and external stakeholders, including global colleagues, government officials, freight forwarders, customs brokers and other professionals in the international supply chain.

This role is based on-site at our Columbus, OH location with hybrid flexibility of 2-3 days per week on-site.

Duties & Responsibilities Customs Compliance & Regulatory Management
  • Provide support in the management of the company's Importer Self-Assessment (ISA) program to ensure adherence to U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) regulations. The objective is to mitigate trade risk and maintain the company's trusted trader status through continuous internal oversight.
  • Ensure all import transactions comply with applicable customs laws, trade regulations, and company policies.
  • Maintain accurate import documentation and records.
Import Clearance Execution
  • Coordinate timely customs clearance of import shipments, including but not limited to maintaining an Import Parts Database to proactively share master data with the designated customs broker (Hs codes, country of origin, FTAs, values, and FDA affirmation codes).
  • Leverage digital resources such as SAP, ACE, Ms365 etc. to manage master data to streamline operations.
  • Resolve customs holds, inspections, and clearance issues promptly.
  • Administer Foreign Trade Zone (FTZ) operations (inventory control, receipt reporting, FTZ compliance, inventory reconciliation, annual reporting).
Trade Documentation Management
  • Review and validate commercial invoices, packing lists, certificates of origin, bills of lading, and other import documents.
  • Maintain records per company record retention policy and US Customs record keeping guidelines.
Supply Chain Security / C-TPAT Program
  • Manage site's supply chain security program by ensuring compliance with U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Minimum Security Criteria, conducting risk assessments, coordinating internal audits, overseeing partner validations, and training employees on security protocols.
Export Management & Compliance
  • Review and validate commercial invoices, packing lists, certificates of origin, bills of lading, and other import documents.
  • Ensure compliance with U.S. Export Administration Regulations (EAR).
  • Ensure compliance with Customs regulations and sanctions requirements.
  • Maintain export records according to regulatory retention requirements.
Broker & Logistics Provider Management & Support
  • Collaborate with customs brokers, freight forwarders, carriers, and government agencies to ensure efficient import operations.
  • Support transportation billing, payment verification and reconciliation of invoices rejected by freight audit & payment provider.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree is required in Supply Chain Management, Logistics, International or related field.
  • Minimum five (5) years industry experience in trade compliance and/or operations.
  • Recognized professional trade compliance certification requiring recurring (i.e., annual) continuing education credits or exam passage (e.g., NCBFAA CES and CCS, ECoP; CUSECO) or Licensed U.S. Customs Broker preferred
  • In addition to the education/ degree requirements noted.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with collaboration across many departments.
Eligibility Requirements
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without restriction.
  • Must be willing to take a drug test and post-offer physical (if required).
