Bus Driver

  • Approx. 4.75 hours/day
  • Compensation based on experience / Bus Driver Salary Schedule
  • 1-year probationary period per OAPSE Article 6.01

Job Description
QUALIFICATIONS:

 1. High School graduate or equivalent

 2. Be at least 21 years of age and have two (2) years of driving experience

 3. Meet all requirements of the Ohio Pupil Transportation Laws and Regulations, State laws, and district Board of Education policy

4. Ability to obtain a Class A or B with School Bus and Passenger.

5. Successfully pass an annual physical examination, tuberculosis screening and pre-employment testing as required by law.

6. Successfully complete the Ohio School Bus Pre-service class requirements or will complete within three (3) months of employment

7. Successfully complete the safe operation of a school bus "Behind the Wheel" training.

8. Obtain and have on file annually an acceptable driver abstract from the Ohio BMV

9. Successfully pass the Ohio School Bus Driving Skills Test

10. Administer first aid as needed

11. Be physically and mentally capable of safely operating a school bus in normal and emergency situations.

12. Have ability to cope with stressful situations.

13. Be physically capable of appropriately lifting and managing handicapped pupils when necessary

14. Comply with all recertification requirements as necessary

15. Comply with and have on file all annual requirements.  (Physical, abstract, blood-borne pathogens, 

4-hr in-service training, and bus driver's certificate issued by the ESC, exempted village, or city superintendent

16. Comply with the Federal Commercial Driver License Drug and Alcohol laws

17. Be neat and clean and possess a positive attitude

18. Be accessible to a telephone

19. Ability to follow written and oral procedures

20. Submit a satisfactory background check as requested

REPORTS TO: Transportation Supervisor
JOB GOAL: To safely transport students to and from school in a timely manner
RESPONSIBILITIES:



  1. It is the responsibility of the bus driver to report for work, allowing enough time prior to departure to  assure all requirements and responsibilities have been completed to operate a safe school bus as required by law.
  2. It is the responsibility of the school bus driver to make a daily pre-trip inspection of the school bus before leaving storage and post-trip inspection after each trip before leaving the bus as required by law.
  3. Check bus after each trip to make sure no student is left on the bus.
  4. Complete a written time schedule and roster and maintain a consistent time schedule.
  5. Comply with bus routes as directed by Superintendent or designee.
  6. Report all school bus accidents and complete all required reports.
  7. Enforce all student laws and regulations.
  8. Attend all safety workshops and meetings as requested.
  9. Operate school buses within the limits of the law.
  10. Notify supervisor of any traffic violation he/she incur.  This includes any violation in a school bus or personal vehicle (ORC 4506.1(e)).
  11. Drivers must remain on the bus when students are in the bus except when assisting special needs students.
  12. Keep bus clean, both inside and out, at all times.
  13. Submit to the random, reasonable suspicion and post accident drug and alcohol testing.
  14. Comply with all Federal and Ohio Pupil Transportation Laws and Regulations.
  15. Comply with all procedures and regulations as established by the Board of Education.
  16. Refrain from the use and influence of alcohol or any harmful or illegal drugs.
  17. Complete at least three (3) emergency evacuation drills per year.
  18. Maintain an appropriate rapport with co-workers.
  19. Communicate effectively with the supervisor.
  20. Comply with all Board of Education policies.
  21. Establish a professional rapport with the students.
