Job Description Summary:
The duties of this position includes but is not limited to accurate, precise, and timely patient test results for the diagnosis and management of human illness. Position utilizes automation and computerization, and manual methods. Responsible for quality control and instrument operation, maintenance and troubleshooting. Position handles blood, tissue, fecal matter, sputum, urine, spinal fluid and other body fluids. Specimens may be contaminated with infectious diseases including HIV and other blood borne pathogens. (expected to achieve ASCP certification within 2 years)

Uses critical thinking, academic theory, facilitation and leadership abilities, and advanced customer service skills in the interaction with others and in the performance of duties. The duties of this position includes but is not limited to: The performance of complex analysis of all body fluids and tissues. Determining the reliability of all analytic data before release as patient measurement for diagnosis and treatment. Interprets information to make judgmental decisions and troubleshoots technical procedures and instruments. Utilizes knowledge of medical correlation of data, laboratory parameters, physiologic factors, medication effects, and specific medical treatments to assess the validity of laboratory data. Uses appropriate testing techniques to evaluation new testing methodologies and instrumentation. Role models safety and infection control practices. Provides mentorship to new lab associates, medical laboratory technicians, and students.

Customer service to clinicians and clients. Must be comfortable and professional on the telephone, able to communicate with physician office staff and clinical staff, and laboratory associates. Must be able to communicate with patients and their families, and use service recovery where necessary.

Quality Assurance Functions and Equipment Maintenance Functions Performs quality control checks on each procedure, on reagents, stains, equipment, etc. Documents and interprets all QC data used by the technologists to determine validity of patient results and verify instrument performance. Documents and reviews maintenance logs to assure optimum system performance, guaranteeing valid data and eliminating costly, time-consuming equipment failures.

Continuing Education and Competencies Remains current in field. Trains students. Trains new employees. Maintains competencies, mandatory educational requirements ACE.
