Job description

Position Summary
Vertiv is seeking an Electrical Engineering student entering their second year of college to join the Large Power Converters Product Engineering team as an intern.
This position provides an opportunity for an early-career engineering student to gain hands-on experience with large Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) and power-conversion systems. The intern will work alongside experienced engineers and participate in engineering laboratory testing, data collection, troubleshooting, documentation, and product-support activities.
No previous experience with UPS systems or power electronics is required. The position is designed to provide practical engineering experience while introducing the student to large-scale electrical systems and real-world engineering problem solving.
Key Responsibilities
Under the guidance of experienced Product Engineers, the intern will:
  • Assist with engineering laboratory testing of UPS and power-conversion equipment.
  • Help set up tests and collect electrical measurements and test data.
  • Assist with reviewing and organizing test results.
  • Learn to use engineering test equipment such as digital multimeters, oscilloscopes, current probes, and power analyzers.
  • Assist engineers with troubleshooting and investigation of product issues.
  • Review electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and system drawings with guidance from experienced engineers.
  • Assist with documenting test results and engineering observations.
  • Help prepare and update test procedures, technical reports, drawings, and other engineering documentation.
  • Assist with basic analysis of electrical waveforms, event logs, and operating data.
  • Participate in engineering design reviews, troubleshooting discussions, and product meetings.
  • Work with engineering, manufacturing, quality, service, and product development teams to gain an understanding of the complete product lifecycle.
  • Support other engineering projects based on current product and laboratory needs.
  • Follow all applicable electrical and laboratory safety procedures.

Qualifications
  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, or a related field.
  • Entering the second year of an undergraduate engineering program.
  • Successful completion of first-year engineering coursework.
  • Basic understanding of electrical concepts from introductory engineering, physics, or electrical-circuit coursework.
  • Basic computer and data-analysis skills.
  • Strong interest in electrical engineering and hands-on technical work.
  • Willingness to learn and ask questions.
  • Good analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of an engineering team.

Previous experience with power electronics, UPS systems, or industrial electrical equipment is not required.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in any of the following areas is helpful but not required:
  • Introductory electrical circuits
  • Engineering laboratory coursework
  • Digital multimeters or oscilloscopes
  • MATLAB, Python, C/C++, or other programming languages
  • Microsoft Excel or other data-analysis tools
  • Electronics or electrical projects completed through coursework, student organizations, hobbies, or personal projects

Learning Opportunities
The intern will receive exposure to engineering areas that may not yet have been covered in their university coursework, including:
  • Large Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) systems
  • AC and DC power systems
  • Power electronics
  • Rectifiers and inverters
  • Batteries and DC power systems
  • Electrical controls and sensing
  • Embedded control systems
  • Electrical schematics and system diagrams
  • Oscilloscope and waveform analysis
  • Engineering laboratory testing
  • Root-cause analysis and troubleshooting
  • Product reliability and corrective actions
  • Manufacturing and field-support engineering
  • Mission-critical data center power systems

Internship Experience
This internship is intended to provide a student early in their Electrical Engineering education with meaningful exposure to real engineering work.
The intern will work directly with experienced engineers on active projects and product investigations. Assignments will be selected based on the student's current knowledge and will become progressively more challenging as their skills develop.
The emphasis will be on learning by working alongside engineers in the laboratory and on real products, rather than expecting the student to already possess specialized knowledge of power electronics or UPS systems.
By the end of the internship, the student should have a better understanding of how fundamental electrical engineering concepts learned in the classroom are applied to complex, high-power electrical systems.
Physical & Environmental Demands
  • Participation in engineering and R&D laboratory activities.
  • Work around large electrical and power-conversion equipment.
  • Laboratory work will be performed under appropriate supervision and in accordance with established electrical safety procedures.
  • Some hands-on activities may involve test setup, instrumentation, wiring, and equipment inspection.
  • Occasional travel to other Vertiv facilities may be available depending on project needs.

Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate is a student who is curious about how electrical systems work and eager to gain hands-on engineering experience.
We are looking for someone who enjoys solving problems, is comfortable asking questions, wants to learn from experienced engineers, and is interested in seeing how electrical engineering principles are applied to real products.
Prior UPS or power-electronics knowledge is not expected. Curiosity, initiative, and a willingness to learn are more important than specialized technical experience.

The successful candidate will embrace Vertiv's Core Principles & Behaviors to help execute our Strategic Priorities.
