Job description


Join Salas O'Brien and be part of a team that provides creative solutions that build success for our clients and employees. Your main role will be designing and laying out HVAC systems for multiple facility types and requirements. Your role will also include developing and sustaining relationships with in-house teams and contractors while providing technical solutions through design and consulting services that address the facility manager and/or owner's requirements. The types of projects that you may work on include:

Resource Reporting
  • The Mechanical Engineer reports to the Mechanical Lead.
  • Work with Project Managers and department Leads to support their project needs.
  • Facilitate cohesive operations and collaboration both within the group and across other offices within the Salas O'Brien network.
  • Support and enforce Salas O'Brien's Safety Standards.
  • Coordinate with the Mechanical Lead to ensure a strong program for personnel development.
  • Assist with new employee "on-boarding" and mentorship following Salas O'Brien's and the office's policies.

Business Planning and Development
  • Identify and understand the client's needs and goals as related to the mechanical group
  • Assist in developing project scopes, basis of design documents, and estimates.
  • Assist Salas O'Brien's primary client contacts by representing and promoting the group's capabilities and successes
  • Assist in building and maintaining successful relationships with clients as a mechanical resource for information
  • Presentation and documentation skills

Technical Duties & Responsibilities
The successful candidate must be highly motivated, capable of working with a team or in a self-directed manner, and must be familiar with the full engineering cycle including, but not limited to the following:
  • Participate in project kick-off meetings and other client-facing meetings
  • Maintains effective communication with project team members, client contacts, and firm leadership
  • Exhibit excellent problem-solving skills, able to find creative, innovative solutions to challenges
  • Be effective at promoting building sustainability and incorporating into system design, then convey to owners in design solutions
  • Have excellent listening, written, and verbal communication skills, and in sensitive situations where it is necessary to effectively communicate and coordinate with others
  • Be able to be delegated to
  • Be able to be lead mechanical engineers and designers on small to medium complexity projects
  • Have excellent teamwork skills

  • Clearly communicate design recommendations to our clients, project teams, construction contractors, and vendors in presentations, meetings, via email and phone as necessary
  • Work independently, or as part of a team on projects with other technical staff, to develop the mechanical system designs that are needed, assuring that the work is accurate and coordinated while ensuring quality control measures have been followed
  • Provide timely services that meet the needs of the clients and the overall project schedule requirements
  • Able to work within a project team to efficiently produce project construction documents for building mechanical systems
  • Will back check your own work to ensure accuracy and optimize the mechanical systems
  • Able to implement and utilize project-specific models and drawing standards
  • Can effectively coordinate work with other project team members
  • Participate in mechanical department standard development and maintenance
  • Be lead mechanical engineer on assigned projects and coordinate work of junior engineers
  • Assist the work of other engineers and designers as a design engineer to generate project deliverables

Required Qualifications
  • BS in Mechanical Engineering required
  • A minimum of 3 years, 5+ years preferred, of relevant experience in HVAC design and layout. A working knowledge of Plumbing, and/or Fire Protection, and general building mechanical engineering is preferred as well.
  • A professional engineering license in Mechanical Engineering is preferred, or at a minimum the ability to obtain a professional engineering license within 2 years. LEED or CEM accreditation and/or green building design experience is a plus.
  • Ability to perform under pressure and work on multiple projects concurrently
  • Demonstrate a high standard of ethics, professionalism, client focus, customer service, ownership, and accountability
  • Ability to undergo Short-term domestic travel

Preferred Computing Skills
  • A working knowledge of Revit, AutoCAD, Navisworks and BIM 360 collaboration
  • Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint
  • Working knowledge of, or have used, Microsoft Teams, Procore, or other internet-based coordination and document-sharing programs.
  • Working knowledge of Load and Energy Modeling Software (DOE-2, eQUEST, Carrier HAP, Trane Trace, or other), COMcheck, and BIM strategies using Revit.

Physical Requirements
  • Lifting/carrying: Carrying light loads related to field measurement equipment, equipment cases weighing 15 lbs. or less.
  • Dexterity: Ability to efficiently type using a keyboard, make handwritten notes, and sketches indoors and outdoors at industrial plants and construction sites throughout the year.
  • Walking/Climbing: Ability to use multi-level stair towers and rung ladders unassisted.
    Visual Acuity: Ability to discern single line and 3-dimensional computer images representing objects being designed or drafted.
  • Hearing: Ability to hear safety alarms and signals while wearing hearing protection.
  • Physical exertion: Ability to walk up to one mile on industrial plants and construction sites
