Job description

Description:

Under general supervision, independently performs troubleshooting, maintenance, repair, and installation activities such as assembling and installing new computer equipment or units of local networks requiring use of standard interface protocols. Assists in installation and cabling, user supports, backups, and maintenance of documentation.



ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

· Troubleshoot, repair, maintain, install, and perform testing activities on various computer equipment, various printer types including laser, peripherals, data communication, and computer network systems.

· Provide support to users relating to both hardware and software problems on their computers. Use electronic test equipment, such as optimal power meters and multimeters, to troubleshoot equipment malfunctions.

· Assemble, install, configure and test computer equipment or units of local area networks requiring use of standard interface protocols.

· Consult and assist manufacturer's representatives in the installation on new computer equipment; exercise responsibility for routine installation or modification projects; assist other technicians or the director in repairing, installing, and testing complex pieces of equipment or local area networks. Submit equipment repair warranties.

· Complete work orders such as installing equipment, connecting and moving devices or creating components of autonomous networks, installing disk drives, correcting definitions on data switches, protocol converters.

· Fabricate cable for use in interfacing peripherals with computers, other peripherals, and networks.

· Install and support hubs, switches, routers, and associated equipment on the network; install copper from IDF's to users' workstation areas; maintain fiber networks and troubleshoot problems.

· Configure and set up servers to work with various programs; install software including, but not limited to, Novell Netware, Microsoft, Unix, Linix, and OS 400. Ensure server backups and networked user backups are performed on a regular basis.

· Must be able to take on-call for evenings, weekends, and holidays and must live in locale conducive with taking on-call.

· Maintain computer network documentation; update computer maintenance manuals.

· Perform related duties as assigned.

Requirements:

JOB REQUIREMENTS

· Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Computer Sciences or related field, and 2 - 4 years equivalent/combined related job experience in information technology that includes training in and knowledge of computer hardware and applications, local area networking, wireless networking, domain and access controls, and telecommunication equipment.

· 1-2 years previous experience in information services and technical support.

· A+ Certification preferred, Networking+ preferred.

· Thorough understanding of and the ability to administer, install, and troubleshoot computer and network hardware, Microsoft Operating Systems (end user and server), Microsoft Office applications, DB2 Database, and associated applications.

· The ability to instruct others in the use of systems and applications.

· Diagnostic abilities and problem-solving skills to identify issues and find solutions to a range of network and computer problems.

· Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, are necessary in order to explain complex information to people who may not have knowledge of networking systems.
