Vizient Jobs Information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Pharmacy Consultant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Pharmacy Consultant, you need a solid background in pharmacy practice, clinical pharmacology, and a PharmD or equivalent degree, often accompanied by licensure. Familiarity with pharmacy management systems, drug utilization review tools, and compliance software is typically necessary. Strong analytical skills, effective communication, and the ability to build client relationships are standout soft skills for this role. These competencies are crucial for providing accurate guidance, ensuring regulatory compliance, and optimizing medication use for clients or healthcare organizations.

How does a Pharmacy Consultant typically collaborate with healthcare teams to improve patient outcomes?

Pharmacy Consultants work closely with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to review medication regimens, identify potential drug interactions, and recommend evidence-based therapies. They often participate in multidisciplinary meetings, provide educational sessions, and help develop protocols to optimize medication safety and efficacy. This collaborative approach ensures that patients receive comprehensive care tailored to their individual needs, while also supporting the clinical team with up-to-date pharmaceutical knowledge.

What are pharmacy consultants?

Pharmacy consultants are licensed pharmacists who provide expert advice on medication management, pharmacy operations, regulatory compliance, and clinical practices. They often work with hospitals, nursing homes, and other healthcare facilities to ensure safe and effective use of medications. Their responsibilities can include reviewing medication regimens, advising on best practices, and helping organizations meet legal and quality standards. Pharmacy consultants play a vital role in optimizing patient outcomes and ensuring that pharmacy services are efficient and compliant with regulations.

* Represent Vizient's comprehensive pharmacy program offerings, including sourcing, aggregation, drug shortage mitigation, analytics, and consulting, ensuring alignment with client needs and organizational priorities.

* Own executive-level client relationships, proactively resolving escalations, addressing complex issues, and driving long-term partnership growth, retention, and satisfaction.

* Develop and coach leaders through structured guidance and feedback to strengthen capability, enhance effectiveness, and support professional growth.

* Lead organizational change by setting direction, aligning priorities, addressing stakeholder concerns, and enabling adoption of new strategies, processes, and ways of working.

* Maintain a significant field presence with approximately 70% travel to engage clients, support team execution, and strengthen relationships with key stakeholders across the membership.

Qualifications:

* 15 or more years of progressive pharmacy leadership experience required, including 5+ years in executive-level roles (e.g., VP, SVP, CPO) within health systems, GPOs, or healthcare consulting organizations.

* Demonstrated success leading large, complex, multi-site or field-based teams, with the ability to develop leaders and drive performance at scale.

* Deep expertise in pharmacy spend management, including sourcing, contracting, drug shortages, and cost optimization across acute and non-acute settings.

* Strong understanding of the GPO landscape, IDN operations, and healthcare supply chain, including contracting strategies and value-based programs.

* Proven ability to build and influence executive-level client relationships, with a track record of driving retention, growth, and client satisfaction.

* Experience leading complex, high-value client engagements, including contracting strategy, pricing, and performance-based programs.

* Strong business and financial acumen, with the ability to leverage analytics, KPIs, and insights to inform strategy and decision-making.

* Demonstrated success leading organizational change and aligning stakeholders across complex environments.

* Recognized as a pharmacy industry leader through participation in national organizations, speaking engagements, or thought leadership contributions.

* Exceptional executive communication and influencing skills, with the ability to lead high-impact discussions across clinical, financial, and operational stakeholders.

* Ability to travel regularly and expeditiously (up to ~70%) to support clients, team leadership, and business objectives.
