    JOB DESCRIPTION

    The EHS Manager serves as the site's EHS leader, responsible for both sustaining a high-performing EHS program and driving EHS excellence through future business growth and activities. This position launches and supports new business operations involving welding and fabrication, with a primary focus on environmental compliance, permitting, and operational readiness. The position requires a hands on, influential leader who can build programs, train employees, and partner cross functionally in a stable, but growth oriented environment. This position is also responsible for contributing to a safe work place and minimizing negative impacts by complying with the EHS policies, procedures, work instructions outlined in the EHSMS Training Assessment for this position.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

      • Leads environmental compliance for new and expanding welding and fabrication operations, including emissions evaluation, waste streams, and permit applicability.
      • Develops and maintains environmental permits and plans (air permits related to welding fumes, wastewater, stormwater, SPCC, waste management).
      • Evaluates and implements controls for welding fumes, particulate emissions, and chemical usage from consumables, coatings, and cleaning agents.
      • Manages hazardous and non hazardous waste programs associated with welding operations (spent consumables, oils, solvents, sludge).
      • Prepares and submits required environmental reports (e.g., air emissions, waste, Tier II, TRI, as applicable).
      • Interface with regulatory agencies during inspections, start up notifications, and reporting.
      • Drives environmental training and awareness for production teams, welders, and support functions.
      • Support the EHS Technician and the development and implementation of hot work and welding safety programs aligned with OSHA and company standards.
      • Conducts risk assessments for welding cells, fume extraction systems, ventilation, and confined or enclosed workspaces.
      • Partners with Engineering and Operations during equipment installation, line layout, and commissioning.
      • Leads incident investigations, near miss reporting, and corrective and preventative actions.
      • Trains employees and supervisors on hot work permits, environmental controls, and safe work practices.
      • Supports a direct engagement, non union workforce through clear communication, coaching, and presence on the shop floor.
      • Builds credibility with production teams, welders, supervisors, and leaders as a trusted EHS resource.
      • Collaborate with HR on onboarding, training, and compliance for new hires supporting business growth.
      • Reinforces a culture of accountability, ownership, and continuous improvement.
      • Establishes EHS processes and metrics suitable for a new or expanding operation.
      • Participates in EHS management system development and audits (ISO 14001 familiarity preferred).
      • Identifies and implements opportunities to reduce environmental impact, emissions, and waste.

    GENERAL DUTIES:

      • Promotes and actively supports a safety-first workplace culture, identifies and reports unsafe conditions, and stops work when necessary to ensure safety.
      • All team members abide by the location's Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) policy which is enforced by the local leadership, complies with the legal and other requirements and operational controls established under its EHSMS, works towards achieving established objectives and targets, and conforms to procedures consistent with the ISO 14001 standard. 
      • All team members will understand all the environmental aspects of his/her job. An employee should report, and if necessary, stop any activity that does not conform to the policy or may injure himself/herself.

    PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS:

      • Identifies and addresses non-conforming work, materials, or procedures within a timely manner
      • Each team member has the authority to initiate action to prevent the occurrence of non-conformities relating to the product, process and quality system and has the authority to stop further work on non-conforming suspect product until the deficiency or conditions have been corrected.
      • Takes ownership of work by demonstrating accountability for results and being honest and transparent when things do not go to plan.
      • Follows 5S principles by maintaining, cleaning, organizing, and improving the areas. Also, by making suggestions to get to the next level of excellence and then doing it again.

    JOB REQUIREMENTS:

    EDUCATION:

      • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, Chemical Engineering, or relevant experience.
      • Certification such as CHMM, CEP, CSP, or CIH a plus.

    EXPERIENCE:

    • Demonstrated experience supporting welding, metal fabrication, or hot work operations.
    • Handson experience with environmental permitting, reporting, and agency interaction.
    • Knowledge of EPA regulations (RCRA, CAA, CWA, EPCRA) and OSHA standards.
    • Strong interpersonal skills, ability to communicate well with all levels and departments of the business.
    • Good project management, organizational, and communication skills.
    • Comfort operating independently in a stable, but growth environment.
    • Experience with industrial ventilation and fume control systems.
    • Familiarity with ISO 14001 and EHS management systems.
    • Prior experience partnering closely with Engineering on capital projects.

    PHYSICAL AND MENTAL DEMANDS

      • While performing the duties of this job, the employee must have the ability to maneuver around plant machinery, work near moving mechanical parts and work in an environment with varying temperatures including in a welding and fabrication environment. 
      • Ability to conduct floor audits and inspections (walking, climbing, standing for extended periods).
      • Occasional lifting up to 30 lbs.
      • Willingness to support off shift activities during start up or critical project phases.
      • On a continuous basis must be able to sit and/or stand for extended periods of time.
      • Must be able to make occasional trips to Manufacturing sites and customers by air and by automobile.
      • Duration from one to four days.
      • Able to be on call 24/7.
      • Able and willing to work around fuel mixtures, moving parts, and electrical power.
