The pay range is $135,000.00 - $243,000.00

Working within Tax, your mission will be to drive value-added work and support our core retail business goals. Our tax team focuses on all aspects of tax reporting including enhancing productivity and efficiency of core compliance through process and technology, monitoring tax risk and opportunities across all tax disciplines, engaging and educating Finance and the broader organization regarding tax considerations, and prioritizing team resources to support key work streams.

As Director of Sales Tax, you will lead a team of experts responsible for multi-category retail item taxability determination, business initiative evaluation and support, compliance, accounting, forecasting, and procurement tax operations and administration. This includes establishing and enforcing best inclassSOX and operational controlsand documentationforsales tax operationsrelated to compliance, accounting,andtax decisions.You will help set the strategy to optimize team and process, championing accuracy and efficiency. You will play a critical role in supporting Target's guest experience, ensuring process and technology support accurate and transparent taxation. You will help ensure the success of Target's retail operations and new business initiatives by providing thoughtful and responsive support to business partners, and evaluation of pending legislation. You will play an integral role in communicating our tax vision, setting goals and defining measures of success for your team, while also working with your peers as a member of the Tax Leadership group to build broader team engagement.

In this role, you will work closely with many partner groups, including Accounting, Finance, Technology and Product, Merchandising, Procurement, Government Affairs and Legal as an integrated business partner supporting Target initiatives, establishing shared priorities, and developing Target's tax positions. You will also work with your team to manage a portfolio of external advisors, including measuring and reporting advisor performance, and achieving planned outcomes within budget.

This role requires strong leadership skills, a focus on developing teams and team members, experience in managing complex sales and use tax operations, the ability to manage multiple partnerships across a complex and dynamic organization, strong communication and advocacy skills, and a passion for driving outcomes. These skills will support your work to deliver optimized tax outcomes, develop future leaders, and ensure regulatory and compliance obligations are met using controlled and efficient processes.

About you:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, Business and professional designation
  • 10+ years of Sales Tax experience with a national public firm or equivalent experience in a large corporate tax department
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to develop top talent and motivate a team through a shared sense of purpose
  • Independently drive accountability, instill confidence, and influence outcomes
  • Proven decision making and analytical/problem solving skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills advocating for tax matters both internally and with external auditors
  • Strong business acumen and customer focus including ability to clearly articulate technical matters and financial statement impacts
  • Knowledge of Vertex, Avalara or similar tax software
  • Knowledge/proficiency in technology including background in RPA and automation and data tools such as Alteryx and DOMO

This position will operate as a Hybrid/Flex for Your Day work arrangement based on Target's needs. A Hybrid/Flex for Your Day work arrangement means the team member's core role will need to be performed both onsite at the Target HQ MN location the role is assigned to and virtually, depending upon what your role, team and tasks require for that day.
