Job Description – Sonographer 1 diagnostic

Facility: Akron Campus
Unit: ACH Breast Center
Shift: 07:00 AM – 03:30 PM

FYI: must have a year of experience in mammography

Position Summary:

The Sonographer performs high-quality diagnostic ultrasound examinations, specializing in breast imaging, to assist physicians in the diagnosis and treatment of patients. The role requires operating ultrasound equipment safely and efficiently while providing compassionate, patient-centered care and maintaining high standards of image quality and documentation.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform diagnostic breast ultrasound examinations according to physician orders and departmental protocols.
  • Operate and maintain ultrasound equipment to obtain high-quality diagnostic images.
  • Prepare patients for procedures by explaining the examination process and ensuring patient comfort.
  • Review patient history and clinical information to determine appropriate imaging techniques.
  • Recognize abnormal findings and communicate urgent results to the interpreting radiologist when appropriate.
  • Assist radiologists during ultrasound-guided breast procedures and biopsies as needed.
  • Ensure accurate documentation and image transfer into the PACS and Electronic Medical Record (EMR).
  • Adhere to radiation safety, infection prevention, and quality assurance standards.
  • Maintain equipment functionality by performing routine quality control checks and reporting malfunctions.
  • Collaborate with radiologists, nurses, physicians, and other healthcare professionals to provide comprehensive patient care.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and comply with HIPAA and hospital policies.
  • Participate in departmental quality improvement initiatives and continuing education activities.

Required Qualifications:

  • Graduate of an accredited Diagnostic Medical Sonography program.
  • Minimum one (1) year of full-time experience as a Sonographer, preferably in breast imaging.
  • Current ARDMS certification (Breast specialty preferred or eligible, depending on facility requirements).
  • Current BLS certification (if required by the facility).
  • Strong knowledge of breast ultrasound anatomy, pathology, and imaging techniques.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and patient care skills.
