Computer Task Group Jobs Information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Data Software Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Data Software Engineer, you need strong programming skills (often in Python, Java, or Scala), a solid understanding of data structures and algorithms, and a background in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with big data frameworks (like Hadoop or Spark), database systems (SQL/NoSQL), and data pipeline tools is typically required, along with relevant certifications such as AWS Certified Data Analytics. Excellent problem-solving abilities, collaboration, and effective communication are soft skills that set top performers apart. These skills ensure the efficient design, development, and optimization of robust data systems critical for driving business insights and decision-making.

What are some common challenges Data Software Engineers face when working with large datasets?

Data Software Engineers often encounter challenges related to scalability, data quality, and system performance when handling large datasets. Ensuring that data pipelines can efficiently process high volumes of data without bottlenecks requires robust architecture and frequent optimization. Additionally, maintaining data integrity and consistency across distributed systems can be complex, especially when integrating data from multiple sources. Collaboration with data scientists, analysts, and DevOps teams is key to overcoming these challenges and building reliable, efficient data solutions.

What are Data Software Engineers?

Data Software Engineers are professionals who design, build, and maintain the software systems that enable organizations to collect, process, and analyze large volumes of data. They bridge the gap between data engineering and software development by creating scalable, efficient pipelines and applications that support data-driven decision making. Their responsibilities often include developing data processing frameworks, ensuring data quality, and collaborating with data scientists and analysts to deliver actionable insights.

What is the difference between Data Software Engineer vs Data Engineer?

AspectData Software EngineerData Engineer
Primary FocusDeveloping software tools and applications for data processing and analysisBuilding and maintaining data pipelines and infrastructure
Skills & CertificationsProgramming, software development, data modeling, often with certifications in software engineeringDatabase systems, ETL tools, cloud platforms, often with certifications in data engineering
Work EnvironmentSoftware development teams, data science teams, often in tech companiesData infrastructure teams, IT departments, cloud service providers

While both roles work with data, Data Software Engineers focus on creating software solutions for data analysis, whereas Data Engineers build the infrastructure to collect, store, and process data efficiently. Both roles require programming skills and often overlap, but their core responsibilities differ in scope and focus.

Job description

ROC is a cutting-edge developer of computer vision based biometric and video analytic technologies whose product portfolio includes industry leading AI/ML algorithms and a full-stack computer vision platform. Founded in 2015, ROC is headquartered in Denver, CO. with offices in Morgantown, WV, and Grand Rapids, MI. With over 70 full-time employees, ROC licenses software in support of a wide range of applications including financial services, law enforcement, military, and consumer electronics.

We are seeking a Software Engineer - Data Engineering and Computer Vision to support our machine learning research scientists. This is a unique opportunity to work alongside scientists developing advanced computer vision algorithms. Please note that this position is strictly data engineering and will not include directly training or building machine learning models. In this role you will build foundational skills in data development to support the creation of artificial intelligence (computer vision and machine learning) algorithms. Most work is performed in the Denver area, with occasional travel as needed.

Responsibilities include:

  • Support the development and maintenance of data pipelines used in computer vision and machine learning workflows.

  • Assist with data ingestion, cleaning, labeling, and organization across large datasets.

  • Collaborate with machine learning research scientists to ensure high-quality, accessible data.

  • Write and maintain robust software to automate data processing tasks.

  • Help monitor and troubleshoot data workflows and system performance.

  • Contribute to documentation and continuous improvement of data processes.

Required Skills and Experience:

  • 0 to 3 years of experience in software engineering, data engineering, or a related field (including internships, research, or academic projects).

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or closely related field.

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail in a fast-paced environment

  • Problem-solving mindset and willingness to learn.

  • Ability to communicate clearly and collaborate within a technical team.

Other Relevant Skills and Experience:

  • Experience with Python, SQL, JavaScript, HTML/CSS, C/C++.

  • Experience with databases and basic data management concepts.

  • Exposure to data pipelines or ETL processes through coursework, internships, or projects.

  • Basic understanding of cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or GCP.

  • Familiarity with version control tools such as Git.

  • Basic knowledge of machine learning or computer vision concepts.

Compensation for this role includes:

  • Competitive salary with opportunities for growth.

  • This position is eligible to participate in our annual performance bonus program and our equity incentive plan (restricted stock units).

  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision insurance plans.

  • 401(k) retirement plan with a 3% non-elective employer contribution (ROC contributes 3% of your salary automatically, regardless of your individual contribution level).

This is an exceptional opportunity for individuals eager to contribute to a cutting-edge computer vision and machine learning company where you will collaborate with a team of experts to support state-of-the-art products that serve a wide range of industries. ROC believes in a healthy work / life balance, and pays particular attention to employee needs and wellbeing. ROC provides employees with unlimited PTO, a flexible work schedule, and a hybrid work environment. Employees are dedicated and hardworking, but are encouraged to take time off to rest, reset, and focus on family and personal health.

ROC is committed to building a diverse and inclusive team. We welcome applicants of all races, colors, religions, ethnicities, genders, sexual orientations, disabilities, national origins, identities, and protected veteran statuses. If you’re excited about this role and the impact you can make, we strongly encourage you to apply.
