BitWise Jobs Information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Full Stack Software Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Full Stack Software Engineer, you need strong proficiency in both front-end (e.g., HTML, CSS, JavaScript) and back-end (e.g., Node.js, Python, Java) development, typically supported by a relevant degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with frameworks (like React or Angular), version control (such as Git), databases (SQL/NoSQL), and cloud platforms is essential, and certifications like AWS Certified Developer can be beneficial. Problem-solving ability, collaboration, and adaptability are vital soft skills that help engineers navigate complex projects and work effectively in teams. These skills ensure the ability to deliver robust, scalable, and user-friendly applications that meet dynamic business needs.

How do Full Stack Software Engineers typically collaborate with other team members during a development project?

Full Stack Software Engineers often work closely with front-end and back-end developers, UI/UX designers, product managers, and QA testers throughout the software development lifecycle. Collaboration typically involves participating in agile ceremonies such as daily stand-ups, sprint planning, and code reviews to ensure alignment and progress. They are expected to communicate effectively across disciplines, help troubleshoot issues that span both client and server sides, and contribute to shared documentation. This collaborative environment helps ensure that solutions are cohesive, scalable, and meet user requirements.

What are Full Stack Software Engineers?

Full Stack Software Engineers are professionals skilled in both front-end and back-end development. They are capable of designing, building, and maintaining the user interface (client-side) as well as the server logic, databases, and application architecture (server-side). This means they can work on projects from start to finish, handling everything from user experience to data management. Full Stack Software Engineers often use a variety of programming languages and frameworks, making them versatile and valuable members of a development team.

What is the difference between Full Stack Software Engineer vs Front End Developer?

AspectFull Stack Software EngineerFront End Developer
Required SkillsProficiency in both front-end and back-end technologies, including HTML, CSS, JavaScript, server-side languages, and databases.Specializes in client-side technologies like HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and frameworks such as React or Angular.
Work EnvironmentWorks on both server and client-side development, often involved in full project lifecycle.Focuses primarily on designing and implementing user interfaces and user experience.
Common UsageUsed in full-stack development teams, startups, and projects requiring versatile developers.Found in teams emphasizing UI/UX, web design, and front-end frameworks.

While both roles require strong JavaScript skills, Full Stack Software Engineers handle both front-end and back-end development, whereas Front End Developers focus solely on the user interface and experience. The choice depends on whether you prefer a broader development scope or specialization in UI design.

Job description

Full Stack Software Engineer

An active TS//SCI clearance with polygraph is required for this role

Hey!

Bitwise is a leading provider of mission-focused intelligence solutions that advance national security for the Intelligence Community and Department of Defense. We're a small and growing company, so you can expect to hop in on the ground floor with us and be a consequential member of the team. You'll be more than a contract performer for us - you'll also be asked for ideas to improve our company and improve your career, and you'll contribute to our team culture. We value growth and community above almost all else, so we gather regularly for game nights, happy hours, tech talks, and plenty more. We think you'll like it here!

Remember, Bitwise is not a cult.

What We Look For

Bitwise hires talented engineers who are driven by purpose and who value a culture of technical excellence, growth, and overall wellness. We deliver new and innovative intelligence solutions to our customers at the very forefront of our country's national security missions. And we do it every single day. Our work matters, and so will you.

We ask that every new hire be able to:

  • Contribute meaningful thought leadership - if not right away, over time
  • Interact with our customers and earn their confidence in your abilities
  • Be detailed, even if that means taking a little more time to get it right
  • Contribute their ideas and ideals to improve all aspects of our company
  • Allow us to invest in their education so we both grow together
  • Know and live our core values every single day

About this Role

We're looking for a Full Stack Software Engineer to join our RECON team and deliver mission-critical technical solutions that generate immediate operational impact. You'll work in a highly collaborative environment across multiple product teams, operating as part of a small, nimble group that moves fast and thinks big.

In this role, you will:

  • Understand our customers' mission deeply and collaborate with team members to gather requirements and rapidly iterate on solutions
  • Independently drive feature development across the entire development lifecycle, taking ownership of your work from conception to deployment
  • Integrate with diverse teams, systems, and technology stacks, bringing flexibility and adaptability to every challenge
  • Design and create reliable, intuitive user interfaces and workflows that make complex tasks manageable
  • Develop cutting-edge solutions for data visualizations, task automation, and workflow enhancements
  • Work directly with mission stakeholders to establish end-to-end prototypes, develop requirements, and contribute to both existing systems and new infrastructure initiatives

You'll be expected to move quickly, deliver deployable solutions, and provide the scripting support needed to keep operations moving forward.

Requirements
  • 12 years of professional experience, OR a B.S. in a technical discipline plus 8 additional years of experience
  • Demonstrated technology flexibility with full-stack development experience across UI/UX, middleware/API, back-end, and DevOps
  • Experience developing with at least one modern UI framework (React, Vue, or Angular)
  • Proficiency writing scripts and services in Python
  • Experience building RESTful web applications using both Spring Boot and Python
  • Familiarity with relational databases (Postgres, SQLite, or equivalent)
  • Familiarity with GitLab CI/CD pipelines
  • Willingness to learn and use any necessary technology to achieve the solution

Preferred Skills
  • Prior experience in CNO (Computer Network Operations) environments
  • Knowledge of end-to-end SIGINT collection and analysis systems
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Benefits at Bitwise
  • Top salaries because we're top performers
  • Pick your PTO - Everyone values time and money differently, so we give you the flexibility to choose between 3 and 5 weeks of PTO with a corresponding adjustment to your pay. Your choice, your balance.
  • All 11 federal holidays, paid!
  • Up to 2 snow days, paid!
  • We'll quadruple (4x!) the first 6% you contribute to your 401(k), giving you up to a 24% company match. Contributing less than 6%? Unclaimed matches come right back to you as extra income, giving you a guaranteed 24% that goes to your retirement, to your paycheck, or both. C'mon now!
  • 100% employer-paid medical, dental, vision, life, and disability insurances. That's a lot. Already covered on health insurance? No problem - we'll trade you this benefit for a boost to your salary instead.
  • $5,250 annual education assistance for training, certifications, tuition, and even student loan repayments.
  • Spot bonuses for obtained certifications, customer recognition, and just about anything else that makes us go "Hot damn!". We hope to say that many times about you.

Salary Range

$282,000 - $332,000

This range includes our flex income and depends upon your annual work hours.

Salary is determined on an individual basis following the interview process and considering various factors such as years of experience, skills, education, and certifications.

What to Expect After Applying

You'll get an email from us right away to acknowledge your application. After that, we'll:

  • Send over additional company materials for you to review
  • Schedule a video call to talk about you, our company, and your place in it
  • Craft a delightful offer package for you and record a video walkthrough
  • Work closely with you through onboarding. We'll keep it joyful and easy.
